Updating Gold Mirrors and Hardware

I am in the process of updating my own home to put it on the market in the spring.  When going through the process, remember the little things DO make a difference.  It's all in the details.

The powder room is a place you don't want to put much money into updating, nor should you have to.  I have outlined for you here what I did to bring mine into the 21st century:

  1. Got rid of the (busy) wallpaper and painted the walls a neutral color.
  2. Updated all fixtures from gold to bronze.
  3. Replaced the gold light fixture with bronze.
  4. Added updated accessories.
  5. PAINTED the gold mirror.

I would upload a before & after shot, but my one and only before shot is not very good.  Here is the after:

Powder RoomWhat I want you to notice is the mirror.  It has been painted with Rust-oleum metallic "oil rubbed bronze" paint (see below).  I love this stuff!  It completely transformed my ugly, gold, dated mirror to something that looks current and works beautifully with the other bronze fixtures.

oil rubbed bronze paint

In addition, I also discovered a spray paint which will allow you to give most any finish an updated look.  This paint comes in several different colors.  Shown below are "hammered bronze" and "satin nickel."

2 cans of spray paint

I spray painted several large brass planters with the hammered bronze paint.  They look great!  I also used the hammered bronze on a downrod for the new master bedroom ceiling fan when I had a hard time finding one to fit the new fan in the correct diameter.  What I like most about this paint is that it is textured.  Either of the spray paints can be used on any type hardware or a multitude of surfaces.

Today's tip:  rather than replace gold hardware and accessories, you can paint them.  Yes, this can be a little labor intensive, but it can save you lots of money.

Patsy, I just wish it weren't so late here or I'd run to Home Depot to try the Rust-oleum product.  What great advice, and it's advice we can also pass on to our DIY Sellers.  Love the series on your own home update.  Good tips and I love the detail you've been giving us.  BTW, next time have a "Stager" take your "Before" photos so we can see the great transformation!(LOL)  Just kidding, I've really missed some great "B&A" shots because I was so excited to tackle a project, I either forgot  to take them or totally messed them up.

Great ideas, Patsy!  I've been considering doing an overdo of my own powder room!

Loooove spray paint, especailly the textured kind!  You can get cheap stuff at a thrift store and make it look new just with a can of spray paint!

Patsy, you're a gal after my own crafty heart.  Love painting old to make new.  Haven't tried the Painter's Touch product so will be on the lookout for it.  Agree that it can be time consuming but it certainly is budget friendly.  Thanks for sharing your info. and photos here.

Hi Patsy, paint is the Stagers Gold. Great advice and so true, easy fixes and great savings. Key is always time. We have done that on some of our investments and it looks great!

Kathy - you're right...  I need a good stager!  Those "before" shots sometimes escape me, especially here at the house, but I'm getting better.  I especially like the metallic paint in the can that goes on with a brush.  I think it produces a great look.  Thanks for your comments!

Cathy - glad you are enjoying my series and can use the info!

Kathleen - I guess paint will ALWAYS be a stager's best friend.

Julia - great!  I'm glad the tips are helpful AND timely.

Ginger - I must admit, I'm not a big DIY gal, but these paint options are too good to pass up.

Barbara - glad to hear you've also had great success with it.  BTW - love your new photo!

Patsy - such a quick, easy fix and yet the end result is huge - the mirror matches perfectly with the bathroom fixtures now.  The bathroom looks very appealing with all the touches you've added.  Can't wait to try the hammered copper spray.  Thanks for the info!

Thanks, Josh.

Sally - thank you!  Wish I could post the before so  you could see the difference, but I think you get the idea.

Anna - thanks.  I'm all about saving money.

Great idea!  Quick question....did the paint run at all?  Just wondering if you needed to prime the metal first, or if the paint adhered with the first coat.  Thanks!

The mirror looks fabulous Patsy. So glad to hear there is another spray paint queen out there. Man what $4 or so can do. I recommend spray painting many mirrors and light fixtures to clients. Rustoleum is my favorite brand. I think I have tried every other brand out there and Rustoleum is the best by far. Doesn't run, doesn't bubble and they have great colors.

FYI...I have used the "high heat" spray paint too for brass fireplace doors, etc.

Patsy,

Thanks for these great paint tips... I hadn't hear of these products before.  The only thing I have spray painted for a Staging project was a fireplace screen, which wasn't to hard.

Your bathroom looks fabulous.  It really looks updated now and I love how cost affective it was!

Julie - no to both questions.  Just spray & go!

Shar - I'm glad to know about the "high heat."  Hadn't heard of that before.  Thanks!

Linda - thank you!  It's definitely an improvement.

Diane - thanks!

Hammered bronze paint. . .What a great idea, Patsy.  I love the options available in spray paint cans these days.  I refurbished a lot of my lawn decorations with a granite look spray paint at the beginning of summer.  The outcome was amazing.

Myrl - a "granite look" spray paint?  That's a new one on me.  Would love to see a photo of the finished product.

Hey Patsy,

I just did a re-design of the entire main level of a home.  We used Rustoleum's Oil Rubbed Bronze to bring back the "old charm" of the hinges, grates, Door plates, mirror trim, light fixture and hardware on white trim with a pale warm taupe on the walls.  The finished look was amazing.  I havn't learned how to upload photo's onto the blogs yet, or I would show you.  Your powder room looks wonderful.

Sincerely,

Laura S. Baker

I love the Hammered Bronze paint and have used it all over my house.  The builder first introduced me to it when we built our house.  Nice job on the mirror!

Laura - Wow!  Sounds like you are the Rustoleum poster lady!  I'm sure you could teach me a few things about the product.  To upload photos, click on the little "tree" picture across the top of your screen, where you also can select bold, italic, underline, etc.  Click on the icon and follow the prompts.  Please give me a call if you'd like me to walk you through the process.  770-843-2307

Sharon - another expert.  Yes, the hammered bronze is great.  I need to use it on some dated furniture hardware.

Hey Patsy!  Thank you so much.  I tried that and couldn't figure it out until I saw the little square icon next to it after I clicked it.  So,...I clicked on that and followed the prompts and away I went (see "So Kitchens Sell?  How about these beauties!"  Here is a photo of the doors I fixed using that Oil Rubbed Bronze by Rustoleum.  I do love the hammered bronze and the coppers can be a lot of fun as well.  It is amazing how much can be accomplished with a little paint!

You can see the grate behind the corner of the bed.  I scrapped it down, sanded it and sprayed it as well.

Oops, the love seat is missing!

I cleaned up all the hinges and hardware on the windows (everyother one opens) then sprayed them with the same oil rubbed bronze spray.

Oh yeah, this is what the porch looked like before I worked my magic;

Isn't she a beauty?

The oil-rubbed bronze finishes are beautiful.  If only you could use these paints on the sink fixtures, too!

Laura - you are a maching, girl!

Leanne - great idea!  You should pitch that to Rustoleum.

Flynn - I'll see you at the finish line!  What day is this for you?
