Putting things off to the last minute isn’t necessarily the least stressful strategy!

When I was a young man in school, when it came to assignments, there were two kinds of kids. Those that would start the job right away and get it finished, and those that waited until the last minute before the deadline to get the job done.

And while each method was ultimately as effective as the other, those that procrastinated always seemed to thrive in the midst off all of the stress. I tended to fall into that category.

But as I have matured, I have continually gravitated towards the notion that getting tasks completed ahead of time can actually make life more pleasant. And by getting an early jump, there is always plenty of time to address any problems that may unexpectedly pop up.

It’s a good feeling when an important chore is completed in a timely manner. And there is an added amount of confidence that is associated with punctual preparation.

And it’s a lot less stressful too!

Maybe that is why the phrase 'Time is of the essence' is used in our contract when strict compliance is necessary?

Richard.....I've never been a last minute person.....if there is a listing brochure to be ready for next week, I'll always have it finished immediately....one never knows what the future holds and other tasks may get in the way.....

Good morning Richard. You make an excellent point here, especially as it relates to real estate. As our market is fluid and changes daily, doing some tasks like searches, CMAs, etc. can be worthless if done early.

As soon as I received my assignment in school, I couldn't wait to complete it. I have since shifted a little..it is less stressful for me now to wait not till the very end but a few days before needed. In the real estate business there are so many things going on with different buyers and sellers and I find that I am in a constant state of getting things done all at different times...plus having a family...I think that my real estate career has helped me loosen up..if that is the correct term.

I was the same way...wait til the last minute and then have to scramble. Now I like it done yesterday.

Richard, so true. As we get older I think that type of stress is not something to thrive on, LOL.

It stresses me out to do things last minute.... I wondered how I survived my college years.

It is the slogan...'Why do today what you can put off until tomorrow' that gets people in trouble.

I think many of the people who complete tasks in the last minute have put plenty of thought (maybe subconscious thought) in to the task and are able to complete it reasonably well with the deadline approaching. That said, if you have a three hour job to complete on time, you can't start an hour before it's due.

Many times there have been additional thoughts and improvements added to a project that was done and ready ahead of time. Applying this to real estate means get those inspections and apps in early to allow time for repairs and other issues.

It's funny you bring this up...I absolutely thrive on stress and when not busy, I become a lazy procrastinator. At the same time, I am obnoxiously well organized, so I get stressed when I don't prepare early!

I was also a procrastinator in college. Not anymore. My Broker Law class doesn't begin until mid-August and I'm already well into the book. Don't like being behind and having to play catch up anymore.

Richard - like you, I waited until the last minute, I really did thrive on tight deadlines. I am still the same way, although I give myself just a little bit more time, like maybe only waiting until the last 5 minutes.

In college I was the procrastinator. I could crank out a "A" term paper in 8 hours. Most of those 8 hours taking place on the day it was due.

Now, I hate waiting until the last minute to do something. I think it's because my brains are fried from raising kids and dealing with car payments & bad real estate markets.

I'm not as good at the last minute as I used to be.

Richard, I noticed you went over the 800K mark - congratulations!!!

I typically make my "List-O-Plenty" and knock out the least desirable things first. Then I work on the things I enjoy. Seems to be working for me....

It depends on the task.. there are too many things that I have had to redo because something changed at the last minute. Of course, I don't like waiting until the last minute. I just work at picking my battles.

Richard - There is an optimal level of stress that hits different people at different times. For me, the peak stress was the day the assignment was handed out. I was off like a rocket, going to the library, reading my textbook ahead, etc. I've mellowed out a bit, but still usually finish slightly ahead of time because it's been my experience that last minute interruptions and emergencies almost always occur.
