Find A Dedicated Realtor Who Knows the Neighborhood

By
Real Estate Agent with Keller Williams Realty-California Coast Property Group

I get it folks, we all like to use our friends if they hold a real estate sales license, but let's face some very real facts here: You the consumer are about to purchase what might be your largest single investment, your home. Working with an agent who has never been to that area or maybe doesn't even work in the same county let alone state is like asking an ear, nose, and throat doctor to treat you for sudden migraines. Sure, they can do it, but do they have the expertise that the neurologist has? I think not.

Before I came back to selling residential real estate I owned a home in Woodland Hills, CA. I knew that even though a friend could probably do the job, I politely explained to him that in the spirit of continuing our friendship, I'd rather go to the local expert who could possibly know more about valuation and not involve a friend in the deal. Business is business was my motto; please don't take it personally.

Never mix business with friendship....or family. It's a total disaster!

It's so hard to do that Sheila but you are absolutely right!  Side note...I grew up in Simi and my parents are still there.  My parents grew up in Woodland Hills and my extended family still lives in the house my grandfather built in the 50s.

As you know, neighborhoods and cities can change in a block!  I will drive clients through neighborhoods to get to the house we are looking at and they get all excited.  Then they see the home they are looking at.  You can see a definite line sometimes and that's why it takes an expert in the neighborhood.  Good for you for keeping your friendship and your professional integrity!

It's funny, I don't get agents who ambulance chase. Even though I grew up in Studio City and then moved on to raise my children in Woodland Hills and Calabasas, I'd not take listings there. To me it's all about the client first. How can I possibly service, and I mean service, a listing in an area that is 45 minutes to an hour away from me. My business demands that I'm available and I would find the best of the best even in an area that I grew up in.

Tricia, I love that your extended family still lives in the house your grandfather built. That is really amazing!

Collette, I know, I know...but get this, even though I clearly stated that I'd work with someone I didn't know personally to save my friendship with this man, guess who lost the friendship as a result? LOL. I guess he was never my friend to begin with.
