The Top 21 list of America's Most Recession-Proof Cities has just come out from CNN/Money.

Madison ranked fourteenth on the list of cities singled out for keeping their labor/housing markets stable and posting robust economic activity during the past couple of years. It has always been said of Madison that we weather any economic storms (or tornadoes in our case) quite well.  I have included a few other statistics below as well as the list of Most Recession-Proof Cities

  1. Albany, N.Y.
  2. Augusta, Georgia
  3. Austin, Texas
  4. Baton Rouge, La.

A good statistic for Madison, to be sure!

But did you notice that half of the "recession proof" cities listed are in right-to-work states, mostly in the South?  Other than three cities located in New York State, Iowa, Hawaii, Wisconsin, Nebraska and the District of Columbia, the majority of the cities that made this list are Southern states (Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas, Oklahoma, Georgia, Arkansas and South Carolina).

This chart speaks to the depth and breadth of the current recession.  It seems like the best way for a city to be recession-proof these days is to be a cheap labor haven, with cut-rate wages.  I'm glad to see Madison, Wisconsin on the list, but it's ominous to see how bad things are out there.
