If you often have the need to access your personal computer from another location, then UltraVNC is a possible solution for you.
UltraVNC is designed to allow remote ("viewer") access of computers ("servers") running any version of Windows, from a wide variety of windows and non-windows environments (Unix, Linux, Palm OS, Mac OS, etc.). Best of all, because UltraVNC was developed and is released under the GNU General Public Licence, it's free!
Since I have special software, including email, that must only run at one location in order to avoid licensing and data synchornizing problems, I have my notebook and office computer set up so that I can access my home computer.
I also have a Palm TX that can also access, view and control my personal computer. I have even used it at home while in a different area of the house or out in the yard to quickly view and control my personal computer. (It allows me to use a stylus on my Palm TX which responds on my personal computer as if it is a mouse.)
While this software is relatively easy to use (you can get by for the most part with just using default settings), it does require some knowledge of computers and networks, especially during setup. If you don't have that knowledge, then get someone to help you with the installation and setup process.
After setup, I have found it to be very easy to use and the response time -- between taking action on the remote ("viewer") system and seeing a response on my personal ("server") computer -- is minimal.
