Last night my husband and I gathered our 3 children and took everyone to see Toy Story 3. Nothing odd about that, is there? Except that my children are 20, 17 and 14!
If you haven't see the movie, or heard the press, this movie centers on Andy (owner of the toys) leaving for college and what is going to happen to the toys when he leaves.
My children were raised in the era of Toy Story and all 3 of them count Toy Story and Toy Story 2 among their favorite movies. As we sat there in the theater, we were all sent back to a time when what was most important to them were the adventures of Woody and Buzz. It brought me back to my youngest running around the house with his Buzz Lightyear action figure as he shouted, 'To Infinity and beyond!" It reminded me of some of the toys my girls loved and how they used to play for hours on end with seemingly unrelated toys. It made me wonder where some of my kids really special toys have gotten to and made me sad at how cavalierly I gave away some of those toys that I wish we had kept (of course, I was comforted by the message of the movie...the toys moving on to a new child who will love them again).
Since we have already sent one off to college and will send the second this fall, it was hard for my husband and I to hold it together at certain points in the movie.
Today, as we dropped my daughter off at the airport to visit a friend in California, my husband brought up the movie again and told me how sad parts of it made him by reminding him how much, and how quickly, the kids have grown up.
If you have older kids and haven't taken the time to go see Toy Story, grab some tissues and a big tub of popcorn and treat yourself. And don't be afraid to take your kids, too. It is a beautifully done move that will tug at your heart strings!
Her is the Toy Story 3 Trailer. Enjoy!
