Where you shop supports the community you shop in.

Yesterday I had the pleasure of meeting a former mayor of Franklin, Tom Miller.  We chatted a bit.  We were at a retail establishment in Cool Springs, which is partially in the city of Franklin and partially in the city of Brentwood.  I think that when we shop in Cool Springs, we don't think very much about the town that receives the benefit of our sales tax dollars.

Tom commented that when he was Mayor, he was very conciencous to shop in Franklin whenever possible.  He was literally putting money into the city's budget when he did that.  He still thinks about it, but maybe not as much as he did then.  And it got me thinking too.  I certainly want all the areas around me to benefit from the tax money we give when we shop, so I doubt I will worry too much.  But I think I will keep that in mind so that I can support my local community, Franklin, with my tax dollars.  And of course, if you shop in a business, you contribute to its ability to stay in business and be viable in your community.

The city of Franklin is doing many projects that will benefit the city and keep it attractive.  This has been hugely beneficially in keeping tourists visiting and people wanting to live here.  And as a resident, I drive around Franklin, TN thinking how fortunate I am that I get to live here.

I guess I will think about keeping my tax dollars a little closer to home.

Monica, this is a very true statement.  We always want to support our towns.  We have a saying in our resort community, "always shop on top".  We are on top of a mountain, LOL.

Monica, as you said it not only benefits the community but also that business.  There are many little shops and boutiques in historic Franklin that I frequent because I want them to stay in business.  I like to think I contribute to their success and continued operation.

Monica, this is a very true statement.  When you shop local you are not only providing tax dollars but supporting local businesses who then in turn spend their profits in the community as well and ultimately that money goes into housing and keeping the area strong financially.  It's all part of the eco buzz words of the current time carbon footprint but to an even more local basis.

Monica - Over 95 percent of tax dollars in Cool Springs go to Franklin, Brentwood didn't want a mall and the congestion, and they don't think they need the money. Since they haven't raised property taxes in 15 years, I guess they have a handle on the budget.

You may notice that I drive a Nissan, Elizabeth has one also. I also refuse to shop at Walmart because over 80 percent of their products are made in China. think local, it doesn't cost any more, and you usually get a better product.
