Sellers, be willing to paint!

Home Stager with Great Impressions Home Staging/Interiors

A Plea to Home Sellers:

PLEASE be willing to paint and take down wallpaper if your agent or stager recommends it. Why?

Bad paint colors (or a bad paint job) can turn off buyers and slow down the sale of your home. They can even reduce the price you get for your home. Have you ever walked into a room painted bright purple or cheez-doodle orange and felt your stomach turn? What do unusual colors convey to you -- it's someone else's home and highly personal, right? That's why you never see model homes painted in "weird" colors. Stick to the neutrals.

Don't take a chance of turning off buyers when a simple fix is available. You can hire a handyman or do it yourself to really save $$.

A fresh coat of paint makes such a big difference in appealing to buyers and updating the look of your house if your current colors are:

* vivid

* unusual

* out-of-date styles (i.e. sponge painted)

* feature multiple designs on one wall (such as circles)

* stencils

In addition:

* most wallpaper and all borders are out of style, except in the case of a feature/accent wall or grasscloth/linen texture covering

According to Benjamin Moore, current "in" colors are gray and purple with yellow accents, but beige, sage green, and off-white are always popular and "safe" colors that buyers will like.

 "Great Impressions Get Offers"

Presentation and price are critical to selling houses quickly. You and your agent figure out the best price; I make your home stand out from the competition to appeal to the most buyers, whether they are first-time buyers, move-up buyers, or down-sizing buyers. As an accredited, experienced staging professional, I know how to make your home grab buyers' attention -- on the MLS and in person. A beautifully presented house makes a great impression, stands out from the competition, and generates offers faster than a non-staged house!

Thanks, Dan . . . wonder why I always post my blog at midnight or later! I'm too much of a night owl -- probably not good at getting readers, but when I'm motivated, that's when I write (otherwise, I can't sleep!)

If I hear, "Oh, people will look beyond the paint!" one more time.

No they won't!  Sellers, start your paint brushes!

Hi, Richard,

Love your turn of phrase! (Sellers, start your paint brushes!)  I'm staging a house right now with an orangey-yellow living room, and the homeowner doesn't want to bother to paint. I'm going to make it look beautiful, but I worry that the paint color is really going to turn off a lot of buyers. It's SO frustrating when owners don't get the message that not changing something is going to hurt them, even with the best staging in the world!

We often walk into homes that are a "decorator's nightmare" and buyer say, "This is a decorator's nightmare".
