Jet Blue's Steven Slater: Folk Hero?

Like many others, I thoroughly enjoyed yesterday's news item regarding Jet Blue flight attendant Steven Slater's melt down recently.  For those of you who missed the story, after many years of service giving passengers the option of chicken or meat, he lost it with a female passenger who was rude to him, culminating in an announcement over the plane's PA system "To the passenger who just called me a motherf*****: f*** you!  I've been in this business 20 years and I've had it!".  He then, in an act of high theater, deployed the plane's emergency slide stopping only to grab a couple of beers before sliding down the chute.  Love it!

Perhaps it's because we've all had to suck it up at some point in the name of professionalism, but Steven Slater's story has resonated with almost everyone and he is being haled as a folk hero.  I saw him interviewed this morning and he carried himself with quiet dignity, clearly bemused by all the attention, and it struck me that he has probably visualized this scenario for many years and felt some relief that he had finally said enough and with such aplomb!

It seems that some people out there don't realize that we are all created equal, one person isn't better than another and we should all respect each other.  It all comes down to the Golden Rule:  treat others as you would wish to be treated.

So, next time someone upsets you or doesn't treat you well, and it really is the final straw, make the choice to "Do a Slater", it's surely a better option than "Going Postal"!

Ahh, I am the bad guy here.  This uncouth passenger should have been "bitch-slapped" but I think Slater went a bit "overboard" (love the pun.....)  I don't see him as a hero.

I'm sure he wanted to bitch-slap her but that would have been assault, I'm glad he took a more dramatic approach.  Hero isn't the right word because he's no Captain Sully, that's for sure.
