How many times as a kid were you told not to point? "It's rude to point, my mom would say". On the other hand there is a nursery rhyme called Peter Pointer.
This is Tomy Thumb (hold up right thumb) This is Peter Pointer (hold up right index finger) This is Tony Tall (hold up right middle finger) This is Ruby Ring (hold up right third finger) This is Sammy Small (hold up right little finger) These are fingers all. (wiggle all fingers) When we want to be quiet, We put the right Peter Pointer on our lips. (Place right index finger on lips) |
I was driving on the highway today and ended up using my left Peter Pointer. ( I am left handed, after all). Even nursery rhymes are geared towards righties. No I didn't use my middle finger ( I mean Tony Tall)
I could see that the left (passing) lane was moving very slowly. There was one vehicle at the head of the pack holding everyone up. I ended up in the middle lane and passed the slowpoke. The gentleman was on his phone. Well he was half on his phone.
There is a law in Ontario now that makes it illegal to use handheld devices while driving. This motorist did not have the phone to his ear but he did have it in his left hand while holding the wheel and speaking towards the direction of the phone.
I looked over in his direction, lifted my left Peter Pointer and pointed in the direction of the right hand lane. I can't say that I came up with this brilliant idea on my own. I have to admit that my husband had a habit of doing this to those who are paying more attention to their phones than their driving.
As I motored on, I glanced in my rearview mirror and Mr. Pokey had pulled out of the passing lane and had settled into the middle lane.
Whether or not he got my hint, he opened up the passing lane for those motorists driving at a speed that allowed traffic to flow properly.
Have you used your Peter Pointer lately? Do I dare ask about Tony Tall?
