Camelback Bridge near Sanford NC One of the oldest bridges in the Sanford area goes over Deep River from Lee to Chatham County. This bridge is called Camelback Bridge and is named for the hump shape the steel trusses on the bridge make.  The bridge was erected in 1910.
There is a small park st the site of this bridge called Deep River park. There are a couple of picnic shelters at the park. The shelter on the right is designed to accommodate wheelchairs. Picnic shelter
Deep River below Camelback Bridge The scenery around the bridge is very lush and green. This park is frequently used as a put in and take out point for local canoers and kayakers. The park is also used by local fishermen (and women) as a fishing spot.
Camelback Bridge is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.  Find out more details of the bridge:  Bridge facts

Deep River from Camelback Bridge We had a beautiful view of the Deep River from the bridge on the day of our visit. To get to the park, take Cumnock Road North from US 421. Follow the road until you cross the Deep River and the park will be on your left.

Hey Rita,

I grew up in Sanford and spent a lot of time at the Deep River. My favorite spot has always been Raven's Rock -They were closed all last year I don't know if they have reopened. I lived in Sanford when it was cool to cruise Kendell Shopping center in Jonesboro, and we were convinced Riverbirch was a real mall. Now you guys have a Ruby Tuesday's so crazy to me. If you ever need help getting around town I still know all the back roads.

Mana,

It is a nice spot - it is usually quiet out there because it is a small park.  When we went out there last weekend we saw 3 people fishing.  There were several cars parked with racks on them but their owners were out paddling on the river.

Rebecca,

Raven Rock still has one trail that is closed but the rest of it is open.  My son's troop camped out there this spring.  Kendale is getting to be pretty empty but Riverbirch is doing well - the Belk's expanded this year.  We have a Ruby Tuesday's, an Applebees, and a Smithfield's BBQ.  When the Walmart Supercenter opens next month we will probably get some more restaurants.  We also have a really nice movie theater in town now.  Plenty of blogging material to keep me busy for years!

Stephanie,

I hope to go back for a picnic in a few weeks when I have a bit more time.

Lynda,

This bridge offers some nice views of the river.  Thanks for the compliment and for stopping by.

Rebecca,

There is a lot more to do here than meets the eye at first.  We have been here for a few years and are still finding new places to go and things to do.

Marchel,

It was built in 1910 - I can't believe I left that out - going back to edit it now.  Thanks!

Mike,

The Deep River is a favorite local place for paddlers to put in their canoes or kayaks.  On days like today swamping the canoe would be mighty tempting!

Where is Sanford NC in relation to Mooresville? And Denver NC? I enjoy visiting Historic places such as Camelback Bridge. I am sure you can really enjoy such a beautiful area. Katerina

Denver NC is about 2 hours west of here.  Sanford is about an hour southwest of Raleigh.

There is a lot of history in the area dating back to before the revolutionary war.  I really enjoy history too - sometimes you can almost feel those who were there before you.

OK.  My best friend just moved to Moorseville NC. She is an agent here in Wellington but now she is going to get her license up there so I will introduce you two and you could do some great referrals together. Marie and I are also working on something you will be interested in to get more leads. Katerina

Wow 1910!!

You are right about how much history is back there.  When we lived in Greensboro we were just a few miles from a Revolutionary War battleground.  The battle was for Guilford Courthouse and they lost but it crippled the English so that it was one of the turning points of the war.  Prior to living there I did not realize how much of the Revolutionary War was fought there.  We loved walking around that battleground and you are right you can almost feel those who were before you.

Katerina,

I am always interested in referrals and leads!  I hope your friend's move to North Carolina goes well.

Thesa,

I can't imagine anyone ever wanting to leave the scenery you have there in Central Oregon.

Ashley,

Thank you so much for stopping by and visiting.  I love sharing Sanford with everyone.

Paula,

I hope I get a restful afternoon soon to - I am booked up the rest of the week!

Marchel,

There is a neat site near here called House in the Horseshoe where you can see the bullet holes in the walls of the house from a revolutionary war skirmish!

Joanne,

I can't wait to get some local photos this fall.  A lot of the parks and places around here are really pretty when the leaves change.  By the time we have fall leaves around Halloween you'll probably be skiing in Colorado.
