It is Harvest and Canning season!

truck full of fresh local cukesSunflowersThis is such a great time of year, the crops that have been planted and so lovingly cared for are now producing their fruit. Cucumbers did especially well this year, just check out the haul from today's picking session over at Gaia Garden Designs. Fresh tomatoes, plentiful herbs, onions, broccoli, peppers of all kinds, the list is just incredible.

FlowersFresh and local produce is absolutely the best. Supporting our locally grown harvests keeps the local growers in business. Most of our local growers have store hours on site and there is always the local St. Cloud area farmers markets. If you are going out for your fresh local produce do not forget to pick up some flowers. Our local farmers have bouquet after bouquet of beautiful fresh fragrant flowers for your home.

canningThis time of year it is not uncommon for me to come home after an evening showing appointment and find the house filled with the wonderful smells of canning. Everything from jams and preserves to salsa, pickles and spaghetti sauce. There is something very comforting about growing and making your own food. Preserves are relatively easy, even for a beginner, and make a great thoughtful gift. Be sure to check out the post for Liz's Blue Ribbon BlueBerry Preserves.

My Mom used to do a lot of canning.  Your post makes me want to get into it.  I could raid my garden and start there.

Steve...Nothing better than a few veggies right out of the garden.  Then this winter the canned version will beat the store version hands down!

Hi Anne

We started with one garden plot and added more. This year we added box gardens.

Liz is still new to canning and getting better. Her preserves are Mmmmm good.

Steve, we are spoiled on all the fresh tomatoes, cucumbers, squash and corn we've had this year.  Walk into our office and be prepared to be given something to eat!

I agree with you. We will eat our fill while they are fresh, but the canning is good also.

We have made an effort to stay organic with the gardens, and it just feels better

than anything you can buy in the store. You grow it, eat it, share it...

Steve, We are in the dog days of summer here.  Our season is done for the summer but we can plant our winter garden in a month or so.

What beautiful pix...we are living in a more urban area now than in the past, so this definitely took me back to our gardening days.  Delightful!
