Dragonfly on a twig in Cibolo, Texas

Wouldn't you like to impress your friends with more facts about dragonflies? Here are some:

- The maximum speed of large dragonflies is around 25 to 30 miles an hour. The average cruising speed is about 10 mph.

- Dragonflies rely on their eyesight more than on their sense of touch or smell, unlike other insects, so their antennae are small and inconspicuous.

- The largest dragonfly today is found in Costa Rica. Its wingspan is 7.5 inches. This is considerably less than the wingspan of a fossil dragonfly: 3 feet!

Robin, did you take that photo?  I wish I had a camera and the skill to take closeups like that.  It's gorgeous!

That is an amazing closeup photo!

We were having swarms of dragonflies in our parking lot a few weeks back.   We couldn't figure out why they liked our black asphalt commercial area over a nice park or pond.  ???

Dragonflies are great subjects, much easier to photograph than butterflies, at least when they settle down. This one was perching on a twig next to our pool, so I swam up next to him and took his picture!

I take my camera out with me now, because if I don't, sure as anything there will be a great photo opp and I'll have to run back in the house dripping wet to grab it!

Rboin I can just see you sneaking up on that unsuspected dragonfly. However, with those eyes I bet he saw you coming and posed for the camera.

Have a nice weekend.

They might have small or nonexistent antennae, but would you look at the size of those eyes? That gives new meaning to the term "bug eye."
