I don't have any pets of my own, I have three kids. But we do have other peoples pets come over to visit, I'll see if I can come up with something.

Anymore pet lovers out there in the Rain?
5:56pm • #16

Great Topic! Lots of fun!

We offer a pet of the month on our web site resource page. Please visit it at http://www.apella.org  - resource page. We have asked our vendors and real estate sales professionals in the network to supply pic's for the site.

The idea came about a few years ago when one of my trainees wife who would ask what animals he may have seen that day while inspecting homes. He started to take pic's of the animals (most of which are ham's) and would e-mail them to his wife, she would then print them off and post them in her special needs class that she was a teacher for in the school system in Michigan so that her students could enjoy them. From this came our Apella's Pet of the Month.

Should more like to partake please feel free.

Thanks for the post - was a total blast!

This is my sweetheart, Jazmyn.  She looks like an old lady here.  She turned 13 this year...a longer than average life for a Boxer.  I had the heartbreaking experience of having to put her to sleep about 2 months ago.  Her body just couldn't keep up with her anymore.  We miss her greatly.

Hello fellow pet lovers!  I am new to Active Rain.  Allow me to introduce my Canine Family!!!   I have three dogs.  Buddy, Jade and Tundra.  Buddy is a rescue Siberian Husky/Cattle dog mix. Jade and Tundra are both white Siberian Huskies. Jade was named for her green eyes.  I named her too soon. As she grew up, her eyes turned amber.  Tundra on the other hand, had blue eyes that are turning GREEN...oh well!  Tundra is only 4.5 months old and Jade has taken on the responsibility of being her surrogate mother.  Buddy is getting on in years. I rescued him from a shelter when he was three and he is now nearly 10 years old. Still full of energy though- he is chasing after the puppy that has disrupted his happy couch-potato existence. Tundra at 4 months is the first photo, Buddy is in the middle and Jade in the last picture. jpegjpegjpeg

Thanks Charles, I have added you as an associate, we cat people need to stick together!  We actually have three inside cats, 1 that moved in under our deck and two dog masters!  Each has their own remarkeable character..and take turns letting us know who is boss! Each animal except the deck monstor and our largest 20 lb gargantuan are rescued from various rotten circumstances.  Our cocker was thrown out of a moving van on the highway. One of my customers knows I am a softie, and brought her to us 8 years ago...She was a mental mess, and is still a neurotic jelly of a dog!  My daughter adores her!  Biggles is a brat.  He was sitting in a kennel on a street with some other pups in front of our groomers..obvious puppy mill..Wyatt saw him and melted over all 3 lbs of him...Several hundred dollars later he quit having seizures, and started giving them to me!  The two most dominant cats were found under the car tires when tiny..together, tenacious and nasty about 11 years ago.  They knew instinctively if we saved them we would be easily dominated, and so it goes, 11 years later they only need to remind us with the occasional puke under the foot to give them more attention!  They sure make the days easier, all the furry messes!  Can't imagine life without them!

I have so many pets and so little space to post!  We currently have 3 days, 2 parrots, one sulca tortoise and a salt water fish tank with crabs, star fish, tangs, little nemo fish and a few others But here is our latest rescue - Jake. One of my clients called me and told me that this dog was swimming in the public pool and would not let the adult get their kids (he was protecting them).  The swim teachers called the police and my husband assigned himself to the call and took him in.  We could not take him to the pound so we brought him home.  We ran ads in the paper and put up posters and no one claimed him.  So now he is one spoiled pup who is not allowed on the couch (as you can tell he does not agree much with that rule)

Donna  - your dog reminds me of my friends new rescue - Ella.  Beautiful Shepherd!

Charles, Well, I know that Jade and Tundra are sled pullers. The Dam of Jade's litter is the lead dog of a sled team that runs short races in upstate NY.  Tundra is from the same line.  Buddy, being part Cattle dog, COULD pull a sled - he certainly is strong enough - but his desire to herd everything into a small circle might make sledding a problem.

Charles...there isn't a living creature that dares cross over or under the fence. Haven't seen a cat in 4 years and chasing cottontail rabbits are a hobby of theirs. I did have 3 horses until earlier this year...the last one was Carrie. She is a rodeo horse...very talented but went to waste grazing all day in the yard and the other two were too much to handle so am horseless right now...(and flyless too :))

People tend to think that but he really is a gentle giant (Unless you come very quick and/or aggressively at me).  People also tend to think he is a "big dumb dog".  Not the case at all.  He is extremely quick in both speed and intelligence.

The only bad thing is that when I buy my kids food at a drive-thru....nobody will stick their hands out the little window thing to give me the food.  =]

Buddy - we found him as a stray about 6 years ago.  He was running the streets eating out of garbage cans.  He's now 90 pounds and spoiled rotten.

boys with two dogsThis is one of my favorite photos- taken about 4 years ago.  The smaller dog is Moonbeam- she had just been  diagnosed with Leukemia, and died about 8 months later.  The big boy is Gus- the goofiest dog you have ever met.  Gus has epilepsy, and is on tons of meds for his seizures, but doesn't have too many any more.  Seeing a 120 pound dog have a grand mal seizure is pretty freaky!!  We got both of the dogs "'used" from firend of ours that for various reasons were not able to keep them.  They have brought us a lot of joy and laughter!

Here are my fur babies.  They are all SPECIAL to me.

This is Chaos Black Magic Isis:  She loves to play ball and Agility.  She is quite spoiled.

Here is Baby Doll, she is one of Isis's babies.  When she was 2 years old they told me she would not survive because of a ring anomly she had.  She was within hours of being put down and then a miracle happened.

This is MeChan - She is my Foster Shepherd that I rescued.

This is Little Man, My Special Needs Puppy :

Do I love shepherds - yes I do.  They are all very special.  And if you could live off love they all would live forever.

Raymond Gravelle, HouseValues writes:

Ok I will do just that.  But, I hope you were sincere when asking.

I took over Little Man when he was 2 years old.  His owner stated that he couldn't keep food down and was vomiting all the time and not putting on any weight.  He also stated to me that just a few weeks prior to me getting him he had stopped barking.

I made an appointment with the University of Missouri Columbia Veterinary Hospital to have him examined.  Within 1 hour of him being there they had discoverd that Little Man had Megaesophagus, Bilateral Laryngeal Paralysis, and a Vascular Ring Anomaly with a persistent right aortic arch.  He weighed only 52 lbs.

Little Man spent close to 4 weeks there and came home with a peg-tube (feeding tube) in place.  This was in November of 2007.

I was told the surgery could be done to release the bands that were constricting the esophagus, but we still had to be concerned with the problem of keeping the airway opened.  As far as the Laryngeal Paralysis - I'm afraid that Little Man will never be able to bark again.

After many challenges with the feeding tube we have now put on enough weight to proceed with the surgery.  He nows weighs 74.5 lbs.

So, in May of 2008 we will be under going surgery.  The decision is whether to release the bands that contrict the esophagus first or tie back one of the flaps so that the airway remains opened.  Were looking at a possible trache being put in for a short time due to the swelling in the throat that may occur.

Each surgery will be done at different times.  We are just going to have to re-evaluate the airway to make that decision.

Little Man may not make it through the surgery, but I pray that he will.  He has a big heart and a lot of love to give.  And what the heck - it is only money - you can't take it with you, so why not do something SPECIAL for this little guy.  He deserves a chance in life.  He is an indoor dog at this point due to the feeding tube.  If we are successful then we can remove the feeding tube and he will not have to be under so much supervision.  He'll then be able to play some.  His stamina will never be that of a normal dog, but he deserves a chance and I will see that he gets it.

Charles - Maggie is so beautiful.  I bet she runs the show at your house.  Sounds like your family loves animals as much as mine do.  My husband came home the other day with a chocalate lab - once I get his picture I will post it with his story.

I have been lucky enough to have three great dogs in my life.

This is my female maltese.  She is a little over one year.  She is always with me...her name is Millie.

This was Mia, another female maltese.  She was a liver shunt dog and passed away just after her first birthday...

And this was Maggie, my first dog ever.  There will never be a dog like Maggie. They all hold a special place in my heart, but Maggie holds a very special place.  She was 14 years old when she passed...

Monique - I know what you mean about having that one SPECIAL pet that just stays in your heart forever.  The bond is what makes it special.  I'm so sorry to hear about Maggie.  She was a beautiful girl.  When I was single my home had got broke into and after that I decided that it was time for another dog.  I ended up getting a personal protection dog and we did almost everything together.  Having him with me I never feared anything.  It is amazing the bond you can develope with an animal.  And the love and protection they can give you back.

His name was Justice.  And 4 months after he had turned 7 years old his spleen ruptured and his stomach filled with blood.  I was told I could rush him to Kansas City to Emergency Vets but they didnt think he would be able to make the trip.  I was faced with a decision that I wasn't ready to make.  Thank goodness for a best friend.

Justice went to doggy heaven that evening, but not without one last time to protect his owner.

I had him in back of the blazer and the vet was going to come out and do what needed to be done to keep the stress off of him from being inside.  I was in the back holding his head when the vet approached and even though Justice couldn't even get himself up into the vehicle to go to the vets he promptly made one last attempt to lunge to protect me.  I never had a dog with so much love and devotion as he had.  He totally forgot about his hurting to protect me from mine.

It has been 4 years now and it still hurts to know he was taken so suddenly.  Here is our last picture together.

Sad news.... regarding Maggie the first pet in this post....

We had to give her away as our other dog had knee surgery and they have to be separate...

The good news is we found a home for her with friends (not to far away) ... at least we can visit...
