Murphy, North Carolina is one step closer to having a new Cherokee Indian casino in our mountains, bringing new jobs and tourist dollars to Cherokee County.  According to this week's Cherokee Scout, deed transfers were recorded on 6 parcels of land in May, totaling about 340 acres.  The properties included several parcels near the town of Marble with frontage on Hwy 19/74.

With two adjoining parcels of land totaling over 450 acres already in the name of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, this means the Tribe's purchase of approximately 800 acres of land in Cherokee County for the planned gaming facility that was announced early in May is now complete.

Among the purchases recorded on May 12 and May 14 was a 138 acre tract of land that was a foreclosure owned by BB & T.  That parcel sold for $700,000.

According to Tribal Chief Mitchell Hicks, the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians is evaluating a number of additional amenities that may be added on the site.  These include:

  • cultural heritage center and museum
  • outdoor gardens and nature trail
  • trout fishing, hiking
  • Great Smokey Mountain Railway gaming excursions
  • future residental golf course development

I drove by the proposed site this morning and so far there is no sign of pre-construction activity going on.  I'll continue to post regular updates with the latest news.  For more information on the new casino, check out my recent posts:

Pretty cool choice for a reblog, june!  It sounds like a huge undertaking so I can see that it might take a while for construction to get underway - really quite a bit of planning!

Good morning, June

Love the sunrise over the mountains.  I saw a similar sunrise while driving to my daughter's home this morning.  Didn't have my camera with me though so I will enjoy yours.

Have a great weekend.
