Colorado test scores released this week offer a more complicated look at what the Districts look at as high performance.

Douglas County is used to being the top standings when student achievement is scored.    Denver has not been in the top standings for a while.

Back to SchoolThe neighboring districts are equally doing well at promoting academic gains with the student populations.

The analysis on the growth data for the largest school districts in the State, show Douglas and Denver neck to neck, and both just ahead of Cherry Creek School District.

The data shows there are still far more students in Douglas County reading, writing and performing math at higher grade levels than in Denver Public Schools.    In reading, for example, half of DPS students were reading at grade level this past spring, compared to 81% in Douglas County.

Denver is showing a higher proverty rate (72%), and Douglas County has fewer than 10% that qualify for federal lunch assistance.

Here is the rankings -

District                Reading                Writing               Math              Totals

Denver                55                  53                   53                 161

Douglas               52                  54                   55                 161

Cherry Creek        53                  54                   52                 159

Boulder               50                   53                  54                  157

Aurora                51                   52                  53                  156

Jefferson            51                   49                  53                  153

Adams                50                   49                  52                  151

According the DPS Superintendent, Tom Boasberg, they have been showing very steady and strong growth now for five years, and it is very nice to see this growth trend continue.    He still would like to see further growth, especially in writing.

Jefferson County is the state's largest district, and showing a median of 50 in reading and math, with writing lagging in the State, but up a point from 2009.    They saw a growth in math within the middle and high school scores.

More than 6,000 exams were taken by students of the Colorado Virtual Academy, an online charter school, but were invalidated by state officials because students at different grade levels were tested in the same room.   This made Adams County rate several points below the rest of the districts.
