Once you've been on Facebook for a while, your friends list will have grown large. Also, you will have "liked" (subscribed) to many other business and group pages. Your clients (active and previous) are probably in your friends list (they should be) and certainly your family is there. Do you sometimes feel like you are missing posts for these most important people? I did until I discovered that you can make lists. Sometimes the large volume of posts from all your subscribed pages drown out the people. In the figure below, the "pages" are posting so much, there is no actual "people" shown. These types of posts are good and instructional BUT you might be missing posts that you don't want to miss.

facebook news feed

So... If you haven't discovered this yet, don't miss this button!
when you click on "Friends" on the left side navigation, note the button you get over at the top right...

facebook create list

You will get a pop-up box where you can select the people that you want to put in a particular list. For example, I have lists created for my side of the family, my wife's side of the family, clients, and one just called "people" which is EVERYONE except all the pages for businesses.

facebook select people

Once you have your lists, then you'll be amazed as you start to use them! Now when you open Facebook in your browser, go over to the left side navigation menu and click the Friends link which then expands all your list options directly below. Start selecting your particular lists to filter your news feed and you'll be surprised about all the "people" news that you've most likely been missing!

(note: Facebook (Jan 2011) moved the location where you select the list that you want to display - see my updated post on where to find out about this)

You're in a business of helping people - now don't lose track of them in your untamed Facebook news feed!

(PS - moving forward, as you accept new friend requests, right away put them into the lists that you want them in otherwise you might accidentally overlook the "newcomers")

Great post -- and a fantastic idea, Craig!  I've categorized my friends, clients, real estate associates, etc but I need to put the categories to work for me.

Hi Craig!  This is helpful---

I created a list per your screen shots.  My question is can I then do "posts" on Facebook to the lists that I create, that would be really cool.  For example, post some personal photos and stuff to a Family List so I don't have to send so many personal posts to my entire list.

Thanks--Mario

Mario: when you make a post in facebook, you can use your created lists. Once you start a post (photos or any kind), notice there is a "lock" symbol button next to the share button. Once you do this, choose "customize" > choose visible to "specific people" > then start typing your list name until you see it and can click it!

I am so glad you posted on this. I knew about lists but not sure how to use them to produce leads. I think I am going to update my current lists and see if this works better.
