PC or MAC Im making the switch

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with LemonTree Realty

So after months of deliberation I have decided to switch from a PC to a MAC. I have a Management Information Systems degree and spent many hours up close and personal with a PC I know the ins and outs and can build them from scratch. With that being said that is what has made my decision so difficult. How can I leave something I know so well for a scary machine that I have really just been introduced to over the past 6 months?

My boyfriend a MAC only user has shown me the ease of MAC's those things rarely say 1% of the time freeze up or crash on you. They are smaller lighter and just plain better. I had the opportunity to play with ilife and more importantly iworks. The templates that apple has built into these applications are just beautiful. They are on a professional level that most of us pay for. Whats better yet everything on that computer is just drag and drop. I can click on a picture on the Internet and just drag it into my presentation. I truly dont do justice to what these programs and machines can do, but I can say I have seen the light.

Most of you are thinking wait, how will you access MLS. Our local MLS has a monopoly with IE and is only compatible on that platform. Well apple are ingenious they have a program called Parallels which allows me to open a windows desktop and programs in another window on my mac. Brilliant, simply brilliant and the software was only $79. The price for most all programs not hundreds of dollars like windows software.

Im sure there are many out there that will not switch but if the pc market doesnt get their act in gear apple will reign once again.

So who else out there in the Real Estate world uses a MAC?

I am on my PC but I love my new Mac!  Now that I don't have to rely on that old version of Virtual PC to run windows...it is like having the best of both worlds!  Once you go Mac....you don't ever go back!

As I teach tech classes, I hear over and over of the superiority of the MAC. It is too bad so many of the programs are not mac friendly, but it seems that is changing too! Sounds like a brave move.

Hmmm, still there are just too many programs on pc format for me to make the switch to mac. although i do think about it once and a while. It's like migrating to Vista, some programs dont work on it, however we all know that sooner or later those programs will have to work or they will lose market share.

Im not certain i can say that about the mac yet. once again, im still tempted tp make the switch, i think it is because their excellent marketing.

My background by the way is in pc's and networking. I have extensive hands on experience with hardware and some software. I was a network engineer for the largest defense contractor in the world for 7 years.

Hi Dave,

Same here I was a network specialist for Seminole county school board and then ran a local high school, CNA certifiedand MCSE. However I am unsure which programs you guys are talking about that dont run on MAC most any software that I have come across does have a mac download. Wondering what programs in particular you are refering to Dave and Joeann.

However I will never go back to the networking world haha :)

Are you sure it's not just because the MACs come in pretty colors?  I saw the new Dell laptops and they now come in those same pretty colors...

HAHA Donna, since I have a MIS degree color is the last thing I look for, but macbooks only come in white or black. Dell and other companies have to come up with the colors to entice more younger buyers who are leaving pc's.

Dave have you made the switch and can you point out which programs? I am trying to figure that out. I had people tell me oh you cant use this on mac, but in actuality you can. I am trying to figure out which programs truly dont work on macs. My boyfriend has been a mac user for years and has never run into the issue. Actually his company is one of the largest purchases of MAC in Orlando so maybe I am taking on his bias, but I would like feedback from anyone who has made the switch and ran into issues.
