Did you see Al Raymondi's I have a Suggestion for a newbie welcome button last month?  His idea was a good one:

"As a way to try to encourage new members to be more active here on ActiveRain I would suggest a new button at the top of our home page for the 'newbie roster'.  Clicking on it would bring up the roster of the members for the last 30 days or the newest 100 or whatever makes sense technically."

He went on to say that "Current members could use the button to say hello or welcome to ActiveRain to new members, encourage them or give them hints etc."  Several folks commented in agreement that this would be a nice feature to add to our homepage.

secret

We actually have a link on the Activerain homepage that serves this function, but it's not labeled clearly.  That's probably why many members aren't aware it exists.  Here's what the link to a list of Activerain Newbies looks like:

Top Members Today

When you click on the highlighted link, which appears near the bottom of the right column on the homepage, you actually get a list of New Members Today (NOT "Top Members Today" as the link is labeled).  In fact, there's a calendar that allows us to view new members on any day since 2006.  The recently re-designed page looks like this:

New Members

Al, I agree you have a great suggestion, and the function is not one that requires the busy Activerain developers to spend days, weeks, and months creating.  They just need to identify the link more clearly so members can easily find Activerain Newbies.  We want to say...

welcome

Who knew??? Isn't the title to a link just as important as the title of our blog? Tell the reader what they are about to read! Thanks for this little tidbit!

even Top NEW Members Today would be better... I guess the "Members Today" is signifying their "blogger born on date"  but when I go looking for it that is not what I think it means.

Ben - I guess it's in the eyes of the beholder.  I think it's an affectionate term, and I was kinda sad to lose that label.  Newbies is certainly better than Oldies, and that describes way too many things in my life these days.  LOL.

Ginger - Glad to help... Enjoy!

Gene - You're right, I don't think anyone has ever found them all.

Cynthia - I think so, but obviously everyone doesn't.  And I'm sure they struggled with what to call it.

Sally - You're one of the people who really made me feel welcome on Activerain.

Maureen - Now... let's see if they get the hint and change it...

Carrie - Some of my best Activerain friends were found this way, so be sure to try it.

Torgie - Looking forward to that.

Margaret, Your suggestion is approved by so many. You have always been one to make others feel welcome and you have been so supportive of me. Much appreciated.

Margaret - YOU are the champion welcomer and reacher-outer on Activerain...

Ruth Marie - It was on the home page for about an hour and rolled off very quickly, so don't feel bad.  There were already over 50 comments  before it ever got featured, so you can see the gold star didn't do much for it.  The good news about that is that I was "on top of" the comments and they never got too out of hand.  LOL.

Thank you both for your commenting... in fact, for finding it when it was a few days old.

Margaret, I love your label.."reacher-outer". There are many of us doing this...especially you.

Haha... I'm sure there's a better term, Margaret, but that's the only thing that came to mind late last night.  And I learned this from YOU - not the term, but the activity.

Yes, the "Top Members Today" link is such a misnomer. I wonder if I would want to be labeled a Newbie, though.

This is SO cute!  Activerain has gotten so big since we started and this is a great way to introduce new members.

PS.  Are you coming to REBAR in Raleigh? Eleanor says yes..If so, we're looking forward to your visit!

Tracy - I'll be there, and so will my daughter.  Then we have to get back to Maryland in time for the Navy game on Saturday at 3, and off to Ocean City on Sunday for the Annual Maryland Real Estate Conference.  Busy, busy week!

Russel Ray - I don't think they have to call it Newbies... why not something like "Welcome New Members"... just call it Activerain Members, and offer a choice of searching by State, alphabetical name, or membership date.
