BRISTOL MOTOR SPEEDWAY may be "the World's Fasted Half-Mile!", but traffic in even in Johnson City and nearby cities during the race weeks may not be as fast as locals would like. So many people come to the Tri-Cities area for the NASCAR races in Bristol that this isn't the best weekend to come house-hunting in the Bristol area, and hotels are hard to book even farther west than Johnson City.
Before we moved to Johnson City, we happened to schedule a house-scouting trip on a race weekend and arrived assuming no problem with lodging. We ended up having to inviting ourselves to stay with friends here.
This is an income-producing opportunity for a lot of folks who rent their homes for astronomical figures during race weeks. Some schedule their own vacations to coincide with the needs of companies who bring executives to the races. I've never done that and have to confess that my only experiences at BRISTROL RACE TRACK is our taking the grandkidis every December to see the great light show, and taking the Track Tours which are offered other times than race week.
The excitement started long ago for folks who wouldn't miss the races, and dozens of families come to camp grounds for maybe a week ahead of time, to enjoy some of the other fun things to do around here, and to be sure they get a place to stay for the big weekend.
Probably a lot of other agents have had people want to look at houses during that week, maybe really seeing this as a great place to retire to, but also possibly just curious and having time to spend during their pre-race-week visit.
People get excited about being part of a crowd of 160,000 fans watching cars go by at over 300 mph. They admire the legendary race drivers who raced here - Richard Petty, Dale Earnhardt, Darrell Waltrip, etc. A lot of people know a lot more about all this than I do; when I mentioned to a friend, a single woman in her 60s, that we were moving to Johnson City from Maryland, her enthusiastic comment was "That's close enough Bristol for the races that I'm coming to see you." was amazed that she was a race fan and also that she knew enough about the NASCAR races to know that Johnson City was near a famous track. She hasn't come yet, but I wouldn't be surprised to see her.
Food City grocery stores will host the Food City Race Night entertainment which over the last 20 years has raised over $500,000 for local charities. Main aettractions are many drivers past and present, and other people associated with racing. There's also food, fun, live entertainment.
Choosing a good agent in Johnson City is the key to your success, whether you are buying a home in Johnson City or selling a home in Johnson City,
Whatever brings you to the Johnson City, you'll find other reasons to stay - Enjoy mountain views, rivers, lakes, medical facilities, higher education, small town feel with unusual amenities.
