How to Make Your Real Estate Website Stand Out

Real Estate Technology with Real Estate Technology and Marketing

Is your real estate website pretty much like any other real estate agent's? Do you use the website templates your agency provides for its agents?

If so, you may want to rethink that strategy.

We don't have to tell you how competitive it is for Realtors® and agents on the Web. "Homes for sale [fill in your town's name]" is one of the most competitive keyword phrases out there. Just about every Realtor® or agent in your town is trying to get ranked for keywords such as the above; you need to do everything you can to help potential home buyers find your site before your competitors'.

Here are some tips to help you create a real estate website that stands out from the rest:

If you're using a website template offered by your agency, you're giving those competitors who have customized websites a great advantage over you. Low quality, free, cookie-cutter, template sites are unloved by Google®. Sure, you probably have a different biography, different contact information, certainly different listings. But if most of the content on your site is the same as the content of other agents in your real estate agency, Google® and other search engines will ignore your site.

Instead, you need unique content for all of your pages.

You can do this by writing content for your site on topics such as:

  • Home buying tips
  • Home selling suggestions
  • Articles on your town's amenities, such as the school districts, the job market, recreational opportunities, etc.
  • Tips on securing a mortgage
  • How to purchase the right amount of homeowner's insurance
  • Some easy DIY home repairs
  • And so on.

To help your site stand out even more, hire a website design/SEO firm to create a "look" for your site that's distinctive. Consider asking the designers to craft a unique logo for your site, as well. If you don't already have a logo for your RE business, consider using this logo on all of your marketing materials. You'll be branding yourself as a Realtor® or agent and branding really helps you stand out from other real estate professionals. Speaking of SEO, a good SEO company can come up with a plan to optimize your site both on- and off-page. In addition to optimizing your real estate website's pages, the SEO company can put together a blogging/article marketing campaign, get you set up on Twitter and Facebook, etc. -- all tools that help you become the go-to agent in your area.

Hi Ted, thank you for your input. I do agree that your site needs to be different in a sense, but not in the way most would think. All too often the focus is put on the way a website looks rather than how the site interacts with the users it intends to attract. The latter can be all the difference your site needs to have in order to make users engage and keep coming back.
