Okay, you've been here at AR long enough now to notice that many bloggers have a big long signature at the bottom of their blogs with a bunch of logos, right?

Here's mine...

Bob Haywood Digital Signature

I first learned about Active Rain Digital Signatures one day when I noticed those cool little "Bottle Caps" at the bottom of Bob Stewart's blog.  So I contacted him and learned what they are and how they work.  And, of course, he was kind enough to send me the code.  Then, after some further research, I learned how to put the text and the links into the signature and how to do this automatically.

For those of you who haven't wondered down this path yet, here's how you do it.  Go to your home page at AR, then click on "settings."  On my Active Rain page, it is in the third section on the left.  Once you do that, your blog settings window will open.  It should look like this...

Active Rain Blog Settings Window

The "Blog Description" box is where you put the HTML code to make those cool bottlecaps.

CORRECTION 9:46 P.M. - THIS IS NOT CORRECT.  The bottlecap code goes in the signature area.

See the word, "Signature" at the bottom?  That's where you want to go to create the text and links that will become your digital signature.  If that space is white, then you have no digital signature in your blog.  But once you fill it in, it will look something like this...

Active Rain Digital Signature

You will notice that I have bold text there and a line of stars.  This is because I want my signature to be separated from the text of my blog.  I also have my picture and links there.  Go back and see my screen shot at the top for ideas on what to include.  And I have to give credit where credit is due here for a moment.  I got many of the ideas for my digital signature from our very own Loreena Yeo.  I just noticed that she has included a link to her Frisco Texas Facebook page.  I hadn't thought of that yet!

Okay, now to the main reason you want to have your own digital signature...

1. First, it is just plain cool.  It looks good at the bottom of your blog and helps set you apart.

2. It gives you further Google Juice.  All those links, along with your name, blog title and whatever else you put there helps Google to see you when you post Public Blogs.

3. Finally, because when your blog is picked up and reblogged either within or outside Active Rain, all the credit keeps going to you, even if it doesn't look like it.

Let me show you what I mean.  Here is a screen shot from a blog I posted the other day

Lake Valley Search Results by Bob Haywood

You will notice that my blog is ranked up towards the top(this isn't the whole Google page - it wouldn't fit).  Then there is the Facebook page I run.  And at the bottom on page one is my blog.  But I didn't put it there.  Some website named Morgit.com picked up the blog and re-blogged it.  I'm not sure who Morgit.com is, but I know they're out of Denver.  I've noticed lately that they are picking up some of my blogs and reblogging them.

Now, here is where that digital signature pays off big time.  Are you ready?  Check out the screen shot from the Morgit.com reblog.

Morgit.com reblog of Bob Haywood's blogs

Notice that my pictures didn't get carried over but my Active Rain Digital Signature did.  So, if someone happens to click through and read my blog at their site, I still am getting my contact information, credit and links in front of them.  My Active Rain Digital signature protects me.

Is it illegal for Morgit.com to reblog my blogs without my permission? I don't know.  Am I going to allow them to continue?  For now, yes.  And why?  It gives me further exposure even though it is on their website.  You may disagree with my take on the Morgit reblog thing, but there is one thing we can all agree on, for sure.

An Active Rain Digital Signature is worth your time and effort!  Go make yours today!

This is excellent, Bob. Not only do you provide a detailed tutorial on HOW to set up the signature but share some great examples for why you should have one. I resisted for a long time, primarily because I added various links and such at the bottom of many post. Now that the digital signature is there the bottom of some posts is too long. The only way to fix is to go through manually and delete what I added in the past so only the digital appears. But otherwise i think it's great, especially with links to social media sites and calls to action.

But actually, all the SEO people say the auto-sig is not the best way to go because if you want the search engines picking up the keywords of your blogs more readily, it needs to be at the bottom of your post. With the auto-sig, you can't put the keywords in for each of your posts, thus I don't use it. I have it saved elsewhere and copy and paste it in each time... just fyi.

I agree with comment #18.  I have had so many add ons from previous years that to add one on now would be awfully long. I would seriously have to go through over a 1000 posts to delete so I could have one signature 'fit all" :)  Great tutorial for the rest though!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if we add a signature now, it'll automatically populate all previous posts, right?

Like Donna, I've also been told not to use the signature for SEO purposes, since we need to repeat the title of the post as the last bit of text.  Not sure what's best, but I think the signatures folks have are quite snazzy! (yours especially, Bob!)

Ahhhh  Bob!

I have tried to do those dang bottlecaps, but it never seems to work for me!  How did you get them to open directly to your Twitter or Facebook page?  I'd like for it to be connected directly to my Facebook Business page, but that's another rant entirely (I can't seem to get anything, including AR posts, to go to my Facebook business page.)

I have a "subscribe to my blog" button, but I don't think it works!  I think it just directs the clicker to my outside blog, but I don't think they get "subscribed."  Am I just a DOOFUS?

Okay everyone, I have permission from Bob Stewart to release the HTML code.  It had been locked up in TLW's safe in Floriday, but no longer.  Here it is!  All you have to do is to paste this code into your signature section after selecting THE HTML BUTTON.  Also, be sure to replace the location of each online site with your own (Facebook, Twitter, etc).  Also, just remove the code for any buttons you don't want or use.

Hi Bob -- Apart from the merits of adding text to signatures, which I agree, I see so many members whose signature is more akin to a marketing ad both in length and content than it is a signature.  Less is more I think, as if one really studies things, you can get the same message across in much less text.  Some of these are longer than an entire height of a monitor!  After all, the thing is called a signature, not an external monologue where there are no inhibitors between one's marketing desires and keyboard.

Donna #33 just FYI when I found out how juicy the signature was I loaded up keywords behind my photos.  It works!  They combine with my neighborhood posts and I don't have to "stuff" my posts continually with the keywords.  So no one really sees my keywords, the pictures are tagged accordingly and the search engines pick them up and combine them with post du jour or posts from 3 years ago.

Many of you are Googling "Buttons" instead of "Social Icons". There are literally dozens of sites that offer free social icons. Read the fine print on their use prior to using them commercially. Yes. ActiveRain is considered commercial.

You don't need coding for social media buttons. You can just upload images (bottlecaps or others) from various websites that offer free social media buttons, and link sites to the button images just like you can with pictures. This is one of the many sites that offers various buttons: http://mysocialbuttons.com/

Bob

One of these days, I have to just sit down and get those buttons. Been meaning to a(for nearly 2 years) but haven't done it yet...but your blog reminds me that I should do this. And soon!

More awesome info! Thanks, Bob. Question... After reading all the comments, is it better to have the auto-signature or to copy and paste it in? Seems that there are 2 camps of thought on this.

Hi Bob,

Thanks for the info.

Very detailed post, with good information of not only how to do it, but some ideas of what to put in as well.

The reblogging thing was good.
