I love free. What I don't love is having to give my email address to be able to download what's free. As we all know, once you've given your email address you will be bombarded with Spam.

I once created an email address just for this reason. I go in once every quarter and delete hundreds of emails so that it will not go over quota and I can continue to use it to download free products.

I found a better alternative. Spambox.us will give you a temporary email address to sign up for the free things you want.

Here's how it works, you give Spambox the email address that you want the free trial or free report to go to, then you select the amount of time you want the temporary email address. I selected 1 hour, but you can even select 20 minutes or 1 day. Then you use the temporary email address that Spambox gave you to sign up. The report will arrive in your real email address but the spam will go to the temporary one.

Pretty cool.

Crystal, interesting thought, but what about any followup reports or contact info.  I use google or yahoo as my source, I set spam filters and check the email occasionally to find out if I missed something I might want to followup on.  The filters are set so that if after 15 days I don't check it, it gets deleted.  Just another thought.

David, this is only for places where you don't want the follow up reports. Right now I have 34 newsletters that I have signed up for, and I don't mind getting them. I liked the free report and the newsletters are more of the same. Yet my spam account, the Hotmail one, I get zero newsletters, just "buy this" and "buy that". Or "Enter the Publisher's Clearinghouse Sweepstakes", which I did once.

When I want to receive the newsletter, I use my real address. When I know I'm going to get spam, I use the fake address. It's just an option that's available to you.

Edited to add, I just came across a use for this. I needed a car insurance quote to see what it's going to cost to add my son to my policy. Once you sign up for any type of quote, you get put on lists, and those lists get sold. No way am I giving them my business address, but I need the quote.

Crystal...

I'll have to check that out. Currently I give my website address and get bombarded there. I try really hard to keep my email spam free. Not an easy task now a days.

There are also ways to aggregate email addresses through yahoo or msn. That way you can check the other addresses at one spot without having to log in to your "spammy" email designations if you choose not to.

LOL, cute, Todd. I did think about that when I wrote this. The thing is, if you really don't want my newsletter you're going to unsubscribe. The free download is not a good loyalty trap. Yes, it captures a prospect's attention, but only good information will keep them there. I should blog on this subject.

Hey Todd, here you are:  SrmXUtOuyKR5JzFY@spambox.us. I hope you get some good ideas from the report. You know what though? Your IP address was captured. So it's not 100% anonymous, but it's pretty close.

As promised I'm back to sign up with my real email address for your newsletter. WOW! That program is amazing! Thank you for that find! Hopefully it will stop my inbox from being taken over with spam.
