What's your favorite park in Austin? Is it one of the classics, like Zilker, or something a little more contemporary like Dick Nichols?
Before I go into a long rant about why my park is better than yours, and you tell me that your park could beat my park in a fist fight, I thought I'd share the values I have for a park.
1. Nearby. Sure, I love Hyde Park in London, paddling down the Serpentine, but that's in London and of no practical use on a daily basis. So, something I can walk to, bike to, or generally get a bunch of family an I to without having to load everyone up in carseats and cupholders.
2. Public. Yup - it has to be something that I can meet people at that doesn't require a gate code or rolled up trouser leg to get entry to.
3. Trails. I need trails so that I can make crunching noises with my bike tires, run on, and generally let my 23 month old daugher onto to give her some direction.
4. Trees. Shade is good in summer. Really good if you don't tan, or are a vampire. I'll let you guess which I am.
5. Water. There's something soothing about water, especially if you can launch into it with a vessel of some description.
6. Ducks. My daughter likes ducks, so I like ducks.
7. Art or interesting architecture to look at, kind of like the Presidio in San Francisco, only it has to be nearby. See point 1.
So these being the judging criteria for the ultimate park, the one I like best is Mueller Lake Park. It's also got great swings and a killer playset, and you can see how much the people with kids like it on Yelp!
So what's your favorite park?
