Read first, comment later.

When you read a post, here on Active Rain or elsewhere, one that has bunches o'comments on it... do you bother to read through the comment stream before plopping down a comment? I know, I know... there are some who don't even read the entire post...  but this isn't about them.

I have seen several posts, recently, especially some of the featured posts... where many of the comments say the same things that were said just a few comments above them.

Sometimes, I understand that you want to make a comment without reading the comments, so that you don't taint your opinion in advance of your comment... but many times, it can be truly edifying to read the comments, if for no other reason than not repeating something that's already been said, and sometimes it's been said better.

I'm one of those that reads through the comments (most of the time) before commenting.  Sometimes my opinion is swayed by a clever comment.  Ocassionally, I get even more worked up after reading some audacious commentary.

And now and then, I read a commenter who says it perfectly... and I just want to say "yeah... what SHE said!"

So, pick up those bifocals, and read the commentary... it may enlighten you... it may anger you... it may really pi$$ you off... but it'll likely be worthwhile to read first, and comment later.

May - It depends upon the subject of the commentary.  In this case, I read very few of the comments on your post.  Philip's had a flare of wit, though:)  In other cases (like one of the recent political posts we were both on) I read every one.  Some of my favorite posts have been those in which the resulting commentary left me enlightened, feeling like I'm having gut rot, and/or laughing harder than I was when watching the scene in Borat where they are racing through the Mortgage Broker Convention butt-naked.

Alan, It looks like I'm a little late to the party here with over 100 comments, but I actually did read most of the comments (although I have to admit it's probably because you guilted me into it!).  The number of comments here just goes to show you how engaging you are...although I think some of your greatest humor is in your responses to your commenters..thanks for always letting your sense of humor shine through!

Sardi-san - I guess, if I'm being honest, I don't always read each and every comment... but I do try to read them all more times than not.

Lisa - hey, guilt is a great motivator!

Bruce - "almost" laughed out loud?  Isn't that the same as saying "I didn't laugh out loud?"

Yes, but I was Grinning Widely.

People would get confused if I posted GW instead of LOL.

Or maybe not....  Can we ActiveRainers start a new fad for GW???  :)

Well since I am comment 108, or I was when I started typing this, I have to admit that I only read the comments of the folks I like.  Phil wins for making me laugh out loud.  I have to tell you that I have made some of my very best friends on Active Rain in the comment thread of posts.  I also click on the notify me of new comments button when a funny post or thread is going on so I don't miss all the future funny comments too.  That way I can come back and have more fun.

Oh ye of little faith.  How can you even ask?  You know I live and breathe for your comments.  Okay, so I don't exactly live and breathe for them, but I do enjoy them immensely.  Wouldn't miss them for the world.  Okay, I would miss them for Antonio, but only for him.  No one else.  xxoo.

I like to comment first and read later so my thoughts are right off that top of my head. I read the comments first when I don't understand a post or  also when it completely fascinates me.
