When I decided to start my original blog back in January of 2006 I really had no idea what I was getting into.  I had no knowledge of social networking or SEO or, quite frankly, whether or not I would proceed past putting up the first post and pointing it to my website so that people could find me in one more place.

Don't get me wrong.  I was hoping it would bring business.  And it has.  Two date I can name 13 transactions that have come from my two blogs.  Directly.  Without doubt.

But without being sappy or emotional I have to say that I have gained immeasurable value from the relationships that I have garnered through blogging as anything else.

***

This last Sunday, Monday and Tuesday Keller Williams International was putting on a workshop for their agents called MegaCamp.  (That's a whole other blog.)  So I went down to Austin a day early because;

  1. I had never been to Austin.
  2. I love music and Austin's music reputation is there with Nashville, New York & LA.
  3. College towns...I love college towns.
  4. I wanted to meet Lani of r.e.revealed and B.R. of Realtor Genius.

Lani and BR (named withheld to protect the innocent) are even better people in person than they are online.  They gave me a tour of their city.  And what a city.  (That's a whole other blog, too.)  They spent hours with me driving me around.  Sharing.  Asking questions.  Answering questions. And having a good time.

Now, I have to tell you.  I knew Lani's work a lot better than BR's when I got to town.  I enjoy reading both.  But for whatever reason Lani's site is just like a cool glass of water on a hot day.  Just right.  So let me say right here that after having spent an afternoon with both...they are both great people with passion about blogging.  BR is an extraordinary thinker and his views of the real estate world and how it is perceived by the public are fantastic.

This post, however, really isn't about Lani & BR.  It's about the fact that through social networking online I have a new friendship with two people I probably would never have otherwise known.  I've spoken on the phone with other bloggers.  Well known bloggers.  And enjoyed those conversations immensely.  But I have advice for you.

As you build your social network through active|rain make sure you take the time to learn about these people.  Read between the lines. And the next time you leave your home city be sure to arrange a cup of coffee, or a beer, or a tubular taco at the Hula Hut with people you know through the written word.

It's okay to pick up the phone and call people, as well.  I have found that the same trait that makes the good bloggers blog is the same trait that will allow them to take a minute out of their day to say "hi".  To connect a name and writing with a voice.  To quite possibly build a new friendship.

 Writer's Note:

I now have to get some Kleenex out.  This doesn't make me less of a man, does it?   :)

Chris,

You are so right! Part of Active Rain is not just getting your name out to prospective clients, but the very "real" friendships that have happened here with people we would probably have never met! I think you writing this posts makes you "more" of a man!

Chrise,

I have friends in Overland Park, Kansas.  If I ever get out there for a visit, I'll be sure to look you up!  Thanks for making it easy to "connect".

Chris, your words are so kind!  We had such a blast with you!!! You're right- the personal connections made over blogging are such an unexpected bonus.  We all anticipate that we will meet clients, but I really truly enjoy the enthusiastic exchange of ideas in person when meeting a fellow blogger.  Like I told Jeff Brown, you set the bar pretty high! :)  Thanks for truckin' around the Hill Country with us!!!

Hey Chris,  Sounds like you had a good time in Austin!  It is so pretty out in the Hill Country.  I don't get over there much but I should.  I enjoy getting to know the people on AR.  You never know when you might run in to them!

Chris - >>>>here's a tissue....and NO you are not less of a man.  :)

I have started making some phone calls to people that stand out when I read their blogs.  I'm working down my list.  So far I have been delighted with the conversations and feel that when I get to 'get out of Dodge' for a while I will be making more calls and making those face to face meetings happen.

There are a bunch of great folks on here.  I only wish I could meet all 42,000+ of them.  Thanks for a great post.

Lani - A great time by all!!!  Should we tell Athol everything?

Stephanie - I never thought Texas so beautiful.  It was my first trip to Austin.  I've never been too impressed with the Dallas/Ft. Worth and Houston areas...from a scenery standpoint.  Always looked as"great" as Kansas City from that aspect.  But Austin is beautiful.

Carol - Thank you.  Plus it makes for a great tax write off!  :)

Larry - Dude. What are you doing here?  And thank you.

Chris,  this is an extraoridinary post and I'm glad to see the gold star as I was just about to flag it for one.  A 5-er for sure.

You're absolutely right about the friendship value of blogging....the greatest treasure I have received from AR is the extensive web of friendships and connections I have made and continue to make. These people add so much to my life, far more than any dollar amount ever could.....

thank you for writing this.

I'm shy, it's rare for me to pick up the phone and call someone from AR that I haven't already talked to "outside".  But every time someone else has taken the time to bother calling me, I have been so honored -- and usually have so much fun!!

You rated a big 5 on this one.  The best businesses are about relationships, and relationships, whether in business or in one's personal life, are never static.  They are either improving or deteriorating.  What a great blog!  Thanks for taking the time.

Jo-Anne - Thank you.

Rolando - I'm not a skier but I love those slides.  Thanks.

Missy - Friendships are cool.

Sarah - You have to be careful. You're so wildly popular on AR that you'd never get any work done if everyone came to visit!

Mike - Thank you.

It is amazing how we can seek people out and they become our "friends" but then we meet them and the realization goes even further. I used to make fun of people for online dating thinking "how can you really get ot know someone?"

Then I realized the friendships that I was creating online through blogging and e-mailing and I realized that it isn't all that much different than when I used to go sit at the Duck Inn in every Friday night hoping that a certain lady - now my wife - would visit.

I had lunch with a fellow blogger from Pueblo Colorado today.  I really enjoy the networking from it.  I have been married for 40 years so never had an opportunity to internet date, but I know a little bit about how it might work!

We came out of Austin before LA. Was in at the beginning of it's music scene, but that is another, much longer and fun story. We still have a recording studio in our house. For us AR friendships are just forming. We haven't met anyone in person yet. But that will soon come. We've also had a few clients too so far, two of which are in escrow now.

This is another good post. Thanks.

Hi Chris - what you've written about is so true!  Reach out to those you interact with online.  I've met some really awesome folks from here on AR when I've been in their areas, and I wouldn't trade those get-togethers for anything.

More of a man, by the way.....

This is the final weekend of the Kentucky State Fair.  Come out and stop by the First Rate Mortgage booth in the south wing.  I hear the pork butt on a stick is to die for!!!

I have already begun to experience this after just 3 months of blogging on ActiveRain.  The support and camaraderie have brought me strength at a time when I needed it so much.  We don't even have to ask...all we have to do is write and pass it forward or reciprocate as TLW would say!  Thank you for sharing.

Chris - you are preaching to the choir, here. I have met some wonderful people on-line and those I have now gotten to know F2F have become friends. And there are many more I hope to meet with some planned travel in the future.  It is absolutely worth the time and effort to get together whenever possible - you just have no way of knowing how much further the on-line relationship can progress with a personal meeting. Thanks for sharing this.

Nah, we should probably let Athol think I'm cold hearted and humorless :)  I'm enjoying it.

P.S: I'll be writing an article about YOU on Sunday... watch out for it!

Hi Chris...

Great Post!  And you know that the ladies love a sensitive man!

I totally agree, I have met what I think will be lifelong friends online from all over the globe!

I can't wait to see the article about you!  Have a great weekend.

Chris - I feel the exact same way.  I have already called several people and would absolutely plan on getting together with them if I were in their area.  The only downside of making friends this way is that it's not easy to plan a get together when your new friends are all over the country.  Great post.
