Today's "Daily Drop" has a blog I wrote about a trip I'm taking to Italy with my mom, daughter and daughter-in-law...and how I'm preparing for it.
Preparing For My Trip To Italy Includes Writing Blog Posts And Using The "Draft" Option
I guess I'm surprised by so many comments, very well-meaning, suggesting ways to continue working on my trip. I DON'T WANT TO....IT'S A VACATION. Properly planned, there is no reason why my business cannot go on without me. I'm not indispensable....neither are you! :)
My Arrangements While I'm Gone:
New Client Inquiries:
I have an experienced agent monitoring my email and phone. She knows what she's doing. I also cover for her when she's gone.
Existing Escrows:
I have a licensed, experienced Transaction Coordinator. She develops a relationship quickly with all my clients once we open escrow and can answer questions and run the cycle for me. Between the Realtor® covering for me, my TC and escrow....existing clients should proceed smoothly. All parties know I'm out of town.
Problems:
Sure...escrows have issues....we all know that. But I have my managing broker up-to-speed on all my accounts and if necessary, he can step in and help. Since some of my escrows are short sales....it helps that the majority of his personal business now is short sales and is well aware how to negotiate and handled the problems which come up.
Internet Presence:
As my previous post mentioned, I'm creating "Drafts" which can be posted in my absence. I also am working with an SEO company on a new website...and perhaps I'll discuss having them post some as well.
I am not trying to imply that I have it perfectly planned, or that something will not go awry, but I have very good people here handling it, and I'm sure they will find solutions just as well as I could. Sooooo.....I'm heading to Italy without my laptop and going to enjoy the time! I'm not indispensable...and neither are you :)!!

Have fun in Italy, Karen!
Which parts of it will you visit?
I've been to Rome and Venice. Loved them both. Took a train trip from Rome to Venice. It was fun to see the countryside.
Hi Ally....we are going to Rome, Florence and Venice. We will also be traveling by train in between. It's certainly beautiful...especially this time of year when everything is green.
Good for you. I, on the other hand, AM indespensible... er... I meant to say... I'm not as secure as you are... and leaving town for 3 weeks in a row, without at least my laptop for e-mail communication would NOT make for a peaceful vacation for me. I would be too worried, even with very competent people left in care of my clients.
I know that's not a good thing... it's much more restful to really "vacate" when you're on vacation... but I know myself too well, and I would not be very happy. It's just a "me" thing.
Karen,
Good for you. That's how I go on vacation. Place everything in capable hands and fly off into your grand adventure!
It will all be there when you get home!
Yes, Alan....You ARE indispensable.
We are in agreement here. If I were to kill over right now, life would still go on. I think Alan said it well for a lot of us - it's a security, confident in myself issue. Sometimes it's also referred to as - believe it or not - pride.
Yeah, Karen! So glad to hear that you are NOT taking that laptop with you. Enjoy every minute of your trip and your time with your mom and girls. It's an opportunity that can not be easily duplicated. I'm sure you've got great people covering for you in the interim so just relax and enjoy!
Karen,
Italy sounds great. And I admire you for delegating to give yourself time to fully enjoy the authenticity of your vacation.
Karen,
Kudo's to you, go have fun and DO NOT do real estate while you are away. We were away two weeks this summer, life went on and had a good plan to cover it.
All the best, Michelle
I think that it is great that you are truly planning to unplug and take a real vacation! It is a great feeling to know that things are in good hands while you are away. Have a great time!
Have a wonderful time on your trip - & hope we'll see some photos when you get back!!
Measure Twice - Cut Once and run your business like a business. Even Cal Ripkin took the winters off from being in the office.
Good for you to have the systems in place and having a Transaction coordinator. I agree a vacation is a vacation, not a time to work. Come back rested.
Bravo, Karen! I heartily applaud your decision to truly enjoy your time alone with your family, temporarily disconnected from your career’s responsibilities. I think this is an important thing for all of us to do from time-to-time, allowing us to rejuvenate our minds.
And it sounds like you’ve put the right people in place to ensure your client’s needs are met.
But… how are you going to survive without your daily dose of logging into the ‘Rain? ;)
Karen, I'm sure you'll enjoy your well-earnred vacation. We all need to disconnect--when we come back we have a fresh take on things and are raring to go. Ciao!
I so needed to read this! My husband and I are leaving this week for vacation sans cell phones and laptops...and I have been feeling a little guilty about disconnecting even though I really, really want to! We aren't going to be gone as long as you are and I have wonderful support in place, so, yeah, I think I am dispensable, too! Thanks and have a wonderful trip!
