Murphy, NC - Things to Do and See

While on our daytrip from Murphy, NC to neighboring Highlands, NC to see Dry Falls, we also stopped in The Bascom – A Center for the Visual Arts. As we entered through the covered bridge entrance we were greeted by this wonderful organic stick art maze created by sculptor Patrick Dougherty.

Here is a time lapsed video of another environmental sculpture that Patrick Dougherty created for the Mulvane Art Museum on the Washburn University campus in Topeka, KS. It was created over the course of three weeks…

Wow!  I have never seen anything like this before - what an interesting art form.  It's got me curious to see what else this guy has created and to learn more about him.  Thanks - very cool Sunday evening read!

Hi Jane. You never know what interesting things you'll find in the mountains of North Carolina!

It's amazing to us too, Rebecca. You really feel like you're a part of sculpture as you walk through it too.

You'll be amazed at what hes created Anna. There are tons of photos and videos of his work - plenty to keep you busy on a Sunday evening.

Stick art, wow!  Can you actually go through the maze?  I think I'd be afraid of breaking it!

Hi Susie! We are so fortunate to have such an eclectic group of artist here in the mountains of North Carolina. We miss seeing you over in Maggie Valley, but loving all your Ocala Horse country post.

You can go through it, Penny and its like walking among a twisted fortified forest.

I love corn mazes and I would love to see this stick maze.  How creative!  We recently had a moose sculpture done in downtown Portsmouth, made of branches and sticks.  It was fascinating to watch it develop.
