Attention Activerainers. We Need A License To Blog? The City And Their Piece Of The Action

We have seen it coming. We have seen it coming in a number of ways. It, is our local municipalities, and their thirst for dollars. Cities and towns are hurting for money, and in some cases bankrupt http://www.businessinsider.com/americas-most-bankrupt-cities-2010-4. The answer for government officials, is to find money where they can find it, and find it they will.

This isn't just police officers writing more tickets. There are the red light cameras. Your utility bills are packing an extra punch these days. Parking tickets are crazy. And lets not even get in to the nightmare costs if your car is towed.

Well now, the blogosphere may be a revenue generator. The city of Philadelphia is requiring bloggers to have a license. That license comes with a $300 price tag. A recent article in the Washington Examiner highlights Marilyn Bess, who runs a website and frequently contributes to Ehow.com. Ms. Bess isn't too pleased about this attempt to charge her, for what looks to be little more than a hobby.

“The real kick in the pants is that I don’t even have a full-time job, so for the city to tell me to pony up $300 for a business privilege license, pay wage tax, business privilege tax, net profits tax on a handful of money is outrageous,” Bess says.

Ms. Bess has made approximately $50 from blogging. So if my math is correct, the license will cost her six times her revenue. Maybe they will let her write off her computer, website costs and office.

So perhaps I'm being a bit facetious, implying that municipalities will charge real estate professionals for the privilege of blogging. After all, Philadelphia is in pretty bad shape, and not every city or town is under water. But it is interesting that a local government feels comfortable sending out a bill for a license, plus a cut of any profit.

This is insane!  I'll tell you where they should be looking for extra money...they should fine anyone who leaves a yard sale sign posted in public areas after the sale has ended.  I'm sick of seeing outdated yard sale signs all over town.  Charge them with littering!

I don't see how a city has a right to charge someone to blog.  I bet if she sued them, she would pound them down.

Yes, it doesn't make sense that Philadelphia is going to start charging 'bloggers' to blog! But since they do need the revenue, they just came up with this brilliant absurd idea!  I sure hope other cities don't follow suit!

Expect a court challenge. I am not a lawyer, and I do not portray one on television. Expect the cost of defending this money-making license attempt to cost the city more than the revenue it generates.

Sharon- nice point. we have a few near my neighborhood that are at least a month old

Bob- I bet you're right. The publicity from this article may be enough, but if not, she can meet them at the courthouse.

Amanda- I think other cities might look to see how this is recieved

Fred- You may very well be correct. How does a city govern the internet? Doesn't seem right.

Tish- You are right, this certainly seems desperate

Lori- We shall see, we shall see

Wow!  That is fascinatingly stupid!  The city will get there money from those who are running true internet businesses.  I imagine they file taxes like everyone else - local use taxes, etc.  If they are concerned about missing someone then they need to look at updating their tax collection codes to be in line with new technology, but this is running close to taxing speech - a dangerous path.

PS, have you ever noticed that even spell check has not been updated to include the word "internet?"

Scott-Well, at least they are going to let her continue to breath without taxing that. Wait, I just heard that oxygen is being rationed. Only ten inhales per hour-then after that a tax of .01/per inhale. Somebody is going to have a surplus soon.

Wow! I thought it was challenging when I heard the city of Danville was hitting up all the agents for a business fee of $10. I thought it was crazy since we're independent contracts and the broker owns the business.

Of all the millions of people who blog, how do the expect to find bloggers and police this thing much less get people to pay.  I think they just shot themselves in the foot.
