With the new school year comes new spending.

Back-to-school season for many families means new clothes, new supplies, updated vaccinations and other necessary purchases to send children into the classroom prepared. For some families, the coming school year means closing the purchase of a new home to ensure no mid-year district transfers will be necessary.

All in all, the back-to-school season brings with it a spike in economic activity for some sectors of the economy, a boost that economic experts say is second only to the winter holiday shopping season.

"I think it's pretty clear that you're going to have that back-to-school retail rush," said Jasper Welch, director of the business Enterprise Center at San Juan College. "Those people are spending money."

The period stretching between early August and Labor Day, known for its "back-to-school" sales and promotions, consistently serves as many retailers second-best sales season of the year, Animas Valley Mall General Manager Jeff Ring

Our district starts school on Wednesday. 8/25/2010. We aren't seeing people change homes or school districts...unless it's a financially distressd situation. Our county is experiencing foreclosures on a high rate. We are rural and sparely populated. I've donated to various organizations to help parents with the costs of supplies.

We've been taking advantage of all those back-to-school sales. It does seem like the economy (maybe not counting tourism) starts up again right after Labor Day.

Okay so the first day of school went great. I wrote a check for 200 dollars for lunch money for part of the year. Now we have a new activity fee this year for any school activities that my daughter wants to do...this fee is for each activity and that includes sports and academic activities. 40 dollars for each one.
