For the first time in many years, I played hooky today from the office.

Last week I wrote a blog post about my Sunday plans. The once per year NHRA Toyo Nationals at Maple Grove are a fun day for my wife and I. Well, about 12:30 on Sunday it started to rain and race cars don't do well in the wet and everything was pushed back to Monday. Well, Monday the rain started about 1PM and never let up ( I didn't go, too much to do at the office) and Tuesday they never got started.

So this morning about 6:30 we decided we would return to Maple Grove and watch the end of the NHRA nationals. I have pasted a few pix here to see.

This is the first race in Funny Car Semi-Final. You can't see the flames on a sunny day. The green Castrol car is the famous John Force. My wife's a big fan so I had to get this picture (and about 3 more).

The Top Fuel (dragster) final. Winner Doug Herbert in the Snap On car

What happens between rounds? In this case, they have 75 minutes to get the car ready. Normally they tear down the engine, transmission and clutch in those 75 minutes. This team was about 15 minutes into the time when I took this photo.

Just one more. Doug Herbert (aka Dougzilla) with a big smile after the win. One of the nice things about rain dates is it's not crowded so you can get close up with the teams and drivers.

Well, back to work (I'm at the office). Maybe I should play hooky more often.

Brings back the good old days, I can still smell the rubber burning and my ears are still ringing.

Thank for the comments. In reality, I'm a roundy round race fan. I used to go to five or six Nascar races a year, but got bummed out by the traffic and the crowds got overwhelming (Try to get into Pocono with one 2 lane road in each direction).

I still go to the half mile dirt track almost every Friday. Love my sprint cars

I always make arrangements to attend the Pepsi Nationals and/or Citrus Nationals.  Moroso Motorsports Park is where we go.  They've got a road racing track and big into carts also.

Former vehicle: 210" flex frame, Front Engine 392 Hemi (1,600hp), Lenco 2 spd. Scary as hell!  But fun!

Cool post!  I'm so envious, Fred.  I may live in Tucson, AZ, but I sure miss the track at Englishtown, NJ!  Click the link to see a 297 mph jet dragster!
