Who Came Up With This Slogan?

By
Real Estate Agent with Fredericksburg Realty, Inc.

"Real estate is our life."

You know I sort of resent that notion.  Granted, I am not a young person with a young family to support.  Thankfully, at this point in my life very few (only one to be exact) rely on me to provide them with a roof over their head and food on the table.  In reflection, I have earned that status.  Yes, sort of like it too!

I do, however, find a need to supplement my income from jobs past.  I have chosen to be a professional real estate agent and Realtor(r);  I do not, however, underwrite that real estate is my life.  My chose profession but not my life.

My wife (of 48+years) and I have five children; we have 13 grandchildren and one great grandchild.  The aforementioned are my life.  I don't have sufficient time to spend all of the time with my family that I would like.  Nonetheless, I do take time to spend time with them when I can.  For example: one of my granddaughters plays volleyball for James Monroe High School (I like to see her games); her sister plays on the Walker Grant Middle School field hockey team (I like to watch them); their cousin plays football for the Clover Hill High School team (he has been offered a scholarship to Virginia Tech) and I like to see his games; another of my grandchildren graduated from college a few years ago and attending her graduation in New York state; my oldest grandson announced his engagement the weekend before last and wanted as many of the family to be there when he proposed (we traveled to North Carolina to participate).  Do you think I could have been doing this without telling someone "Sorry, I would like to show you a home, but I have a prior family engagement."

I found it very difficult  to "just say no" as I started in this career in Fredericksburg Virginia.  I took a step back and looked at the real successful people in our local area, I saw that they were alloting time for themselves and their family rather than working 16 hours a day, seven days a week.  Made sense to me!  After all, do you have your doctor's home number to call?  How about your dentist?  Your accountant?

Have seen too many practitioners spend so much time chasing the next buyer or seller, that they neglected their family.  Sometimes it takes years to experience the unfortunate results; but when it hits, it hits!  It manifests itself in many ways (divorce not being the least of them).

Hate to tell you this but . . . you have been warned.

For those who wanted to contact me about helping them buy or sell a home - am sure you will understand!

No, real estate is not my life!

God, family, real estate....our careers are a means to and end, not the end in and of itself.

Thanks for the reminder about priorities.

It is amazing how many people think that it is your life though.  I actually had a fellow realtor get upset at me because she forgot to return my call to confirm a 5:30 appointment and called at 5:15 and was upset when I wouldnt drop everything, call my clients and show the condo a "little bit late".  The condo was 25 minutes away for me and my clients and since I didnt think I was going I was preparing dinner.

At first I was tempted to call my clients and see if we could do it but then I thought why should I give up my time because she messed up.

It felt good to be in control of my own life and time.

I have also resented that slogan as I do have  a life that I enjoy very much and yes real esate sales and training is a big part of it but it is only a PART of it not ALL of it!  Great topic!

Well said and I agree. However, I think that when you first start in the business there is no shame in working the long days as you establish yourself, so long as you have a clear vision of where you want to go. I will admit that I enjoy real estate and I love hockey! Go Canucks Go!

When I started in the business it seemed I was working 24/7. Now being a veteran so to speak It seems I am working smarter. I think thru educational training and having a super wife who is very supportive I find this job a lot easier than my earlier years. I have to agree with Carol Williams "real estate is my career, not my life."

It is a lot easier now to just say NO when appointments conflict with family time.

Thanks Jay

What's the saying?

"No success can compensate for Failure in the Home"

Real Estate is something I like to do, but I try to stay balanced.

Ed - good point.

I have a close friend that used to be a travel agent... being a travel agent was her life. Then the industry was quickly disrupted. Sadly (and abruptly) she had to develop an alternate reality.

Hi Ed, Congratulations on your Featured Post and Gold Star.

Your family is fortunate to have you and so is Real Estate. Love the way you balance it all.

I agree. Yes, in the beginning you have to work hard and maybe long hours, but you do that to learn to "work smarter" as was previously stated. After all, you are working for you AND your family, so it should only be a career so you CAN have a family!

Real Estate is a PART of my life. If I were a client, I would want an agent who understood the value of life OUTSIDE of work. God. Family. Work. In that order.

We all have ways of expressing ourselves and sometimes it may come out wrong. I think by taking the expression in context, it just means we really like Real Estate.

Ed,

I so agree!!  By the way our friends decided it was not the time to sell here so the referral may not come through.  The father said he was going to rent.

Another great reminder to us all to keep life and work (real estate) in balance, and to remember what is really important, and what contributes the most to your sense of well-being and self-esteem. Hopefully it's NOT working 24/7 and making money to the exclusion of everything else. :(

I have to agree with Peter Andres. I always felt that expression meant that you loved Real Estate.".Real Estate is my life because I love it."

Good post, though. I think if we don't watch out the slogan will be "Active Rain is my life"

Ed....good post. And like many have said, good to have the space in your life....and the so called freedom to do what you want, when you want.

Ryan Windsor... I agree.... starting out.... work those hours... I did....and now I can relax some.

Jay McGillicuddy.....I agree that it can be someone's career and not their life. But I think Karen Hurst says it best....

Karen Hurst........"it's her life because she loves it. That's how I feel. I don't let it engulf my love... I don't let it run my life.... but it's there most of the time, because of my true passion for what I do.....

Ed...spend time with those grandkids.... sounds like you could use 8 days a week.... ;o)

Sometimes it feels like real estate is my life though.  Depending on the situation, it is definitely hard for me to say "no" also but then again, I need to keep reminding myself what I'm doing this for.  For me, it's the flexebilty to work around my daughter's schedule so that I may spend time with her.  I'm a chauffeur some afternoons taking my daghter from practice to practice.  I guess a big part of it is time management.  Good post Ed. - Aloha

Probably the same person who came up with the slogan

"Nobody in the world sells more Real Estate than...."

Looking at that statement from a logic perspective, if any of us sell more real estate than "nobody", and "nobody" sells more than "Brand X" - then do we all sell more real estate than "Brand X"?

Not picking on "Brand X" here - just the nonsensical slogan - there are many other examples out there.
