Whether you have family members with sensitivities to commercial cleaning products or you're looking to help our planet, using “green” products isn’t that hard.

With two young boys and a glass top table, commercial glass cleaner used to be a staple in my house. Until one day I ran out and needed a quick substitute.

Mixing a quick solution by pouring 1/2 cup of vinegar into a clean spray bottle and filling the rest with water, I was on my way and I’ve never looked back. Use it with newspaper (I always thought this was an old wives tale but it does work) and you have a great glass-cleaning product.

It is also much cheaper than store bought product. Almost 95% of these products are water.

Add a teaspoon of tea tree oil and you have an antiseptic cleaner for use in bathrooms and kitchens.

You don’t have to make changes al at once, start off with one product and go from there.

Do you have a “green” recipe for a cleaning product that works?

Note: use caution when using on surfaces, always conduct a test spot first.

Vinegar water is also great if you have a pet that has an accident in the home. It naturally removes the odor and the pet will not feel it needs to mark over the spot time and time again. Told this tip to a friend whos new dog had been going over and over in their kitchen for months. One deep cleaning of the kithen with vinegar water and the dog never did it again, not bad in my book.

Another one is Vanilla extract to clean out the inside of a fridge. This tip came from a appliance repo guy and they deal with some seriously bad smelling fridges. Natural and afterwards there will be no odor left from what he says...haven't had a need to try this one.

Lucie,

From a gal who uses Clorox wipes on just about everything, I found this 'natural' approach really interesting.

I'm going to bookmark your blog and watch for more ideas!  Ken had some as well and I'll keep them all in mind for the future.

I got an email with this information about bleach and its effect on kids.  Not sure it is true but it does make you think.

Dr. Doris Rapp, who researches the effects of harmful chemicals on children's health.  (You can find her books, including Is This Your Child's World? at http://www.amazon.com/.)  In one of her studies, she tested the effect of bleach on six-year-olds' handwriting.  I looked at the printed results, and was amazed at the evidence.  Before a bottle of bleach was opened, students wrote their names fairly well.  Then, with just an opened bottle of bleach in the room and the fumes wafting through the air, the children wrote their names dramatically different.  Some wrote messy, some too small to read, and one even wrote backwards.

Someone else wrote that they tried it with Clorox wipes and same thing happened.  I guess you can never be too safe.
