Why Would You Build Green-The Results Are In

By
Real Estate Agent with thredUP.com

For those of you that have been following my posts on Green, you know that there are many ways to take a step towards Green and for many reasons.  One post I did,  To Clear Up Some GREEN Confusion, explains it pretty well.  If some of you are just "tuning in" I will recap the main 4 reasons to build a Sustainable or Green Home:

  • You desire a Healthier Home- This will generally be for those that suffer from Asthma, Allergies or are just concerned with Indoor Air Quality and Toxins in normal building materials
  • You desire a Highly Energy Efficient Home- This will generally be for people that want to invest in Lower Energy Costs while they live in the home
  • You want to help the Environment-  This will generally be for people that are wanting a home that will have lower emissions, manufactured or recycled products, etc. if it will help the Environment
  • You need a Quieter home-if you live near an airport or busy road such as a freeway

I don't want to confuse this post, but as I mention in my previous blog, any Green or Sustainable can be a mix of all of these points as a system.

Well, I promised you Results from doing a Poll on my sidebar to find out why someone would want to build Green.  I now have 50 votes so I thought this would be a good number to work with and show them.  So, here are the long awaited Results:

  • Healthier-  19 Votes
  • Energy Efficient- 19 Votes
  • Environment-  12 Votes
  • Quieter-  0 Votes

I was amazed at how this turned out.  Many of you know that Sustainable and Green Homes are Built for the Consumer almost as much as the Environment.  Most Sustainable and Green homes are Healthy and Energy Efficient at the same time-pretty much equal in terms, just as the poll showed why people would want one.

I will continue to have the poll on this post, but I think I am going to change my sidebar.  Time to change it up and add something new.  For those of you that did not get to vote, Please feel free!

Stephanie - it is good to see the results of your poll. It is timely information and demonstrates what information is getting out to people. I like JaneAnnes' "Because it is SMART" also! Congrats on another feature!

This is a great post.  I hadn't reaized that there was a "green" board here on active rain.  We have two green developments that came online here in Redding.  They came on line just about the time that the market fell apart.  I know that they were struggling more than most developers because prices were higher.  I think that I'll read some of your posts and see if I can share some information with them.

thanks.

My son had a new home built 2 years ago. He recently got a letter from the builder telling them that he was now building just green homes. It was startling the difference between upgrading the windows during construction vsa replacing them 2 years later.

Hi Katerina,  I figured that is the one you would choose.  :)  Thanks a bunch!!

Hi Pamela,  I was not going to do a GREEN Poll...but I guess I could.  :)  I will think of something good.  Great choice on the poll!!

Hi Thesa,  These homes will usually be quieter but many don't realize that.  :)  Most people realize the dollar savings.

Stephanie,

Great series. We thought this may be a link that would interest you ( http://www.sunridgecommunity.ca/ ) . It is the first built green community in Canada, and it has great environmental architectural controls that can be implemented elsewhere (ie mandatory rain barrels).

Cool poll.  I was thinking of trying my own recently, but wouldn't you know it's actually pretty hard to come up with a question that's worth asking?

Hi Jeff,  Those two choices seem to be the popular ones.  Thanks for stopping by!

Hi Missy,  LOL.  That's ok, I understand.  There are so many good features in sustainable homes that it's impossible to choose just one.

Thanks Mary,  I thought about you when I was posting this...I remember you were wanting to know the results.  I like janeAnne's also.  :)

Hi Bright,  There are lots of post here in the rain about how to go green and have more efficiency in your home.  Let us know if you do something and how it turns out!

Thanks Larry!

Hi Kate,  tell us more about the communities.  Sounds interesting.

Hi Sharon,  What was the difference?  Was it more or less?  I would love to know.  :)

Hi Matt,  I live neat George Bush IAH in Houston.  I could use a quieter home at certain times of the day.  Actually, since I did the insulation it is much, much better.  I am surprised!  Well, not really.

Hi Bridge City,  Thanks for the information!  I will check it out!

Hi Jeff,  I guess I will have to think of another one too.  Hmm...maybe we can brainstorm some.  How about a yes or no question?

Do you know what Low VOC Paints are?   Which Flooring would be considered green?  We could have fun with it.  :)

Hi Susie,  I could try!  :)  If I don't know the answer I bet I could find one from someone in the rain.

Stephanie, I voted some time ago and I think I voted for energy. But like you I'm surprised at the results. Something I don't think much about is noise - at least as far as my work goes. But at home it is important to me. Makes you wonder what people don't know and what we may not be educating the public about. What else are we missing?

Hi Dena,  I was told that the number ONE thing that people notice when going from single pane windows to double pane windows is NOISE.  Less noise in the house.  It is interesting how we want things and don't even know it.
