Across from Sand Key Condos find The Real Scoop

Ryan's Ice Cream and Yogurt Shop on Sand Key - Clearwater Beach FLorida 33767Last week I wrote about the Dog Days of Summer on Sand Key Beach Clearwater, Florida. We enjoyed the beach and watching both the Sea Screamer and the Pirate Ship pass by. Well after a long day at the beach we were reminded that there is nothing is better than cooling off at Ryan's Ice Cream & Yogurt with a truly decadent sweet treat. The funny thing is the name is a bit deceiving because they don't actually serve yogurt - but they do serve gourmet a large variety of ice creams, sorbets, shakes, smoothies, cakes, pies and even rainbow snow cones.

Ryan's is one of the 20 shoppes that makes up the The Shoppes on Sand Key - across the street many of Sand Keys luxury waterfront condos.Ryans ice cream and yogurt sand key clearwater beach florida 33767

The Shoppes on Sand Key are the only stand alone retail establishment on Sand Key so they get quite a bit of business from the people living and staying in the Sand Key condos and from locals like us. There are deli's, resturants, tropical clothing stores, Dunkin Donuts and our favorite ice cream shops - Ryans!

Ryan's is family owned and offers a variety of great ice cream flavors and even fancy waffle cones, dipped in chocolate with sprinkles .  They offer limited seating inside at 2 tables with the ceiling fans whirling above but with a great view outdoors we chose to eat our treats on the boardwalk overlooking Clearwater's Intercoastal Waterway.

Last week I asked the boys to help me pick their favorite Ice Cream at Ryans. Well one settled on a family favorite - the Mint Chocolate Chip - so cool and refreshing.   The other decided to drop the "Cream" and just do "ICE" as in Rainbow Sno-Cone...

Watching him enjoy his sno-cone was a great reminder of life's simple pleasures!

Sometimes we forget to just savor the little joys of life - a sno cone, a great view, a cool summer  breeze - Does life really get any better than this?

Ryan's Ice Cream & Yogurt is located at Suite 118 of the Shoppes on Sand Key and is open daily from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily. Their phone number is (727) 596-0006 - Click the link below for directions to our favorite ice cream parlor.

Great show, and he looked like he really enjoyed it.  Answer a question from a Colorado in-lander for me...

Why is it Sand Key and not Sand Cay?  I know Cay is pronouced Key, so why would it be spelled k-e-y?

Thanks Cyndee!

Mmm.  Ice Cream!  Ryan's sounds like the place to be on a hot summer day in Clearwater Beach FL.  Do they have Rocky Road Ice Cream?  It's my favorite!

Joanne - I've researched it for you - I believe it's a language thing and also relates to when in time the land of shore was named - we have mostly "key's in Florida and in the Caribbean you see the word "Cay" more often.

Here's something that may do a better job of explaining it...

In the HISTORY OF KEY LARGO By Jerry Wilkinson he writes:

"A note on the word "Key" used to identify an island. Its origin is not well established except by usage. Most believe that it began by the Spanish adapting the word "cayo' from the Taino Indians of Hispanola and Cuba referring to small islands. The Spanish normally used "isla" for island and "islet" for small island. At least in the New World, they appear to use "cayo" and "cayuelo" for a very small island. The English used "Cay" or "Kay" such as Cay Sal Banks. Cay is pronounced as the letter "K." English maps of the Keys made just prior to the Revolutionary War of 1776 used the word "Key." A Colonial American court record of the "Libel of Dennis and Allen vs the snow St. Fermin alias Britanis" in 1744 used the word "Keys" referring to the Florida Keys. See the Admiralty Papers, Vol. 2, 1743 -1744. "

[Origin: 1690-1700; < Sp cayo, prob. < Arawak]

There's always something good  to be said about an ice cream shop. It's primal. A symbol of good time treats and fond memories. The first one in our memory is long gone, and while we were in LA CC Browns on Hollywood Blvd. closed. But others are still there to take their place, and form new memories for the kids of today. It's all a good thing.

Thanks again for taking your time to comment on something we just did. Like ice cream, it was most appreciated.

Cyndee,

Glad to see you back on AR!  Hope you recover quickly - I have had a bit of a head cold or allergies or some kind of crud this week too.

Nice presentation of your local ice cream and cold treat spot.  I love ice cream - give me a scoop of cookies and cream or rocky road.
