Debate: Should you Drive Your Kids to SCHOOL OR Send them on THE BUS?

BUS OR NOT TO BUS????

School starts next week and I am feeling like I have this big issue:  To send my kids on the school bus OR NOT!!!

I know it might sound crazy to some people..."I rode the school bus and I turned out okay!!" Right!? Well that may very well be true, but kids are growing up "faster" than I remember!!

riding the school bus
There are so many pros and cons for both....Is the bottom line..."I feel 'safer' to drive my kids to school".....not just for there physical safety, which has been pointed out, BUT for their emotional safety...there is less supervision on the school bus for what the kids "talk" about...I can wait for all that....

Chalk up another reason to HOME SCHOOL...BUT that is a WHOLE other POST!!!

So what are your thoughts....?????

Jennifer.....I rode the bus as well and I think I turned out okay (the jury is still out on other opinions)

I live in a very congested area and the difference in the traffic during the school year can add up to 45 min on a 10 mile commute.  If for no other reason it would save on fuel and frustation levels of the working class that are stuck in traffic because of the "school drop off"

Have them take the bus - children adjust more quicker and appreciate you as a parent more when they are left to fend for themselves.  Giving them a ride to school would be a treat or a reward - otherwise they will take you for granted and you will be driving them everywhere until they get their license.

Good Luck!!

@Libby, driving my kids to school takes less than 5 minutes and it is on the way to the office, which would get me out of the house and to the office early.....

@Laurie, you are not the only one who feels that way and I do like the idea of a reward....I am really struggling...AND I have been driving them to school for 2-3 years now Haley 2yrs and Hunter 3yrs!  Trying to break this....mostly with my son...my daughter is ready to take the bus to school for Kindergarten....

Thanks for your responses.....

Depends on the state's school bus driver no cell phone use or texting laws.

Jennifer,

My three kids rode the bus and they all turned out okay.  Most of the time, we drove them in the morning and they rode the bus after school.  They're all in college now, and said they have the fondest memories from the bus rides. I understand your concerns about the kids growing up too fast, but that really starts in the home.  I'm sure you'll make the "best" decisions for you and your family.

Jen,

It really depends on their age. Though I must say, I have to agree with Laurie. Children learn how to interact with others much better, and develop their own personalities, by not being sheltered so much.

I'm a bus advocate. Of course it depends on what age children will be on the bus with them

Jennifer ultimately you will have to be comfortable with whatever decision you make and from the sound of things, the run ride is not looking good.

Perhaps you could ease into it by taking a cue from Michael (#5) drive them either in the morning or evening (mix it up a bit) until you feel comfortable.  The one thing I do hope will not happen is that you instill some kind of fear in your kids so that they become as apprehensive as you.  If you decide to "test" the bus, just listen to the kids everyday and whether intentional or not, you'll hear about how the bus rides go.

some of my grandchildren are bused and others are driven to school....the ones who are driven to school are certainly protected more than the others....but the bused kids seem to be able to handle more challenges than the other children.

Hey Jen!  When my son was beginning kindergarten I was feeling the same way as you.  Then we put them in Catholic school so I have to drive them anyway.  I agree with you because there really are mean kids out there today and I wouldn't want my child exposed to what I've heard happening on the bus.  But I also grew up taking the bus, my mom was a single mom and still at work when I went to and came from school.  I never had a bad experience on the bus.  But again I do agree kids have changed.... Good luck with your decision.

Jen,

I worked at my children's school for five years and did have them ride with me but if they wanted to ride on the bus with friends, they were able to. Good luck with your decision!
