Did you know? Contact Jim Frimmer for all your San Diego real estate needs

How to impress prospective buyers

Someone said that if you study history, you can learn from it. Perhaps we can learn something about real estate and prospective buyers from a little San Diego history.

Call Jim Frimmer for all your San Diego County real estate needsWay back in the late 1860s, Alonzo Horton was in the process of building a new downtown San Diego (New Town). By the spring of 1869, 124 houses had been built in New Town or close by. Horton offered to furnish brushes and lime if the owners would whitewash their houses. Although most of them took Horton up on the offer, they were slow to actually do the whitewashing, so Horton hired people to do it for them.

Well, some of it, anyway.

Horton instructed the laborers to whitewash only the south and west sides. Why? Because those would be the sides seen by anyone arriving in New Town by ship.

Of course, the houses looked a little funny but Horton would not finish the other two sides, forcing the owners to do it themselves.

Legend has it that the sight of the fresh, clean houses so impressed newcomers that many of them made San Diego their home.

Can we learn something here?

Very interesting. I wonder what percentage of residents DID in fact paint the other sides of their own homes. Ah, yes... Curb Appeal!

Curb appeal is still something that makes as much of a difference as staging.

Hi Jim,

Neat story.  And it does reinforce the importance of curb appeal and first impressions.

Great post Jim, attract Buyers to us by looking as sharp as we can and choosing the properties to show that are sparkling hopefully on the inside as much as on the outside!

Thanks for the bit of history, Jim.  Obviously curb appeal has always been key. I wonder if the cave men ever worried about their cave appeal?

Jim, Mr, Horton understood people very well. He was able to leverage that understanding to become a very effective RE marketer.
