Olathe-Through the Years is the last of the twelve six foot boot sculptures on display in Olathe, Kansas.
This boot sculpture is one of my favorites, maybe because I may fit into this category, artists of Olathe 50+! The designer, Linda Burgess, provides features and images of scenes and items representative of Olathe's settlement, development and progress from pioneer times through present day. Three collage areas depict distinct ears of Olathe's development while the fourth collage represents agricultural heritage.
The location of this boot sculpture is in front of the Olathe Medical Center, near the intersection of I-35 and 151st street, just on the south side of the Great Mall of the Great Plains. There is a lot of detail in this boot, so look closely at the images presented.
The sponsor, Olathe Medical Center, is home to the Kansas Cardiovascular Center, The Birth Place and Women's Health Center, the Kansas Joint Specialty Center, the Olathe Regional Oncology Center and 24-hour board-certified Emergency physicians. Olathe Medical Center, a not-for-profit, is one of the only hospitals in the country to offer 24-hour services for the deaf and hearing impaired through its Hear for You program. Why not, the Kansas State School for the Deaf is located here as well.
In 1953, through funds raised by charitable-minded citizens, the first Olathe Community Hospital opened with 30 beds. As Olathe grew from a rural community to a large urban center, the need for a more modern facility also grew. In 1987, Olathe Community Hospital, renamed Olathe Medical Center, moved to its current location on a 270-acre campus at 151st Street and I-35. Owned by Olathe Health System, Inc., Olathe Medical Center is one of the largest health campuses in the Midwest. Growth in this area is ongoing and gives way to a wonderful assisted living center, KVC Behavior Healthcare, Inc. and the Ball Convention Center close by.
