Sutter Street Renovation in Folsom
(Slide show has 7 images)

We've had a couple hot 100+ degree Greater Sacramento days.  And to quote a line from the Danny De Vito movie, "Throw Mamma From The Train", the evenings have been warm and sultry.  While sitting out on the back lawn last night, watching the moon get fuller, I remembered a tale I heard recently, about Historic Sutter Street, in Old Town Folsom.

Earlier this month, I began hearing rumors about Legendary Folsom Tunnels, which were rediscovered and are to be preserved.  The tales surrounding the tunnels which are not simple cave structures, but are actual arched tunnels with rock and brick work, are plentiful - running the gamut from use for running alcohol during prohibition and prostitution.

The public may not ever be able to really tour these areas of Historic Old Folsom.  But, I decided to drive the 7 miles up highway 50 to see how the revitalization of Old Sutter Street was coming, and see if I could determine where those old tunnels may be.

I have blogged about Old Town Folsom, with pictures in the past. The middle of Sutter Street was populated with vintage trees and granite columns.  The trees are said to have only been about 40 years old, and weren't really thriving in their present environment due to the shallow bed they were planted in.  But, the granite columns had been there from early beginnings in Folsom's 1800s history, and can be easily seen in vintage photographs of the area.

About 4 years ago, Folsom began a goal to preserve the historic district's cherished character and ambiance, while improving access for people with disabilities.  They also wished to improve fire protection, while also repairing an aging water and sewer infrastructure.  They also hoped to attract new business through beautification.   A few months ago, they migrated from the planning stage into implementation and actual construction.

The photos in the slide show above, are the what's happenin' now on Sutter Street.  The project is a tad behind, and not expected to be completed, until sometime in November.

I suspect business owners are anxious!

Now here's the good news - Old Town Folsom has tons of free parking.  And it is convenient.  The sidewalks of Old Town are still accessible, and some of the best food in the area is on Sutter Street, with parking at the back door.

One of my favorite Mexican restaurants in all of Sacramento County is Hacienda Del Rio.  They are open for Lunch and Dinner.  And there are wonderful views of Lake Natoma from their decks.

Also, Yager's Pub, has excellent food and is a great place to unwind, spend time with friends, and has 23 beers on tap.

Snook's Ice Cream and Candies is across the street from Yager's Pub, and down a block from the Hacienda Del Rio.

These are just a few of the cafes, restaurants, shops, and businesses along the 4 block stretch of Sutter Street, that makes up the heart of Old Folsom.

Hi Myrl...Your slides give us a great visual of what's happening on Sutter Street.  It looks like it will be an interesting spot to take a stroll when all the work if completed.

Which program did you use for your slideshow?  I llike the size.

Suzanne - I feel lucky living near so much history.  It's only 100 miles either way from Sacramento, to reach San Francisco to the West, or Lake Tahoe to the East.  And we are surrounded by California Gold Country.  It provides lots to see, including the great sites here in Sacramento.

Great shots Myrl - Folsom looks like it has a lot to offer. They're ripping up some roads in Cape Canaveral right now and it's a real pain for the residents and merchants. They start, then stop, then start again. Hopefully it will all get done by tourist season.

Jack - You are right, it is our's. . .and we are California!  I'm anxious to see how Old Town Folsom looks, once the renovation is complete.  I'm really anxious to find out what will happen to those old granite columns, which were in the street median, but are now missing.

John - Just about everywhere I travel anymore, it's being tore up and renovated.  Some of it is stimulus dollars, some of it is bond money earmarked for projects, and some is long range plans, now coming to fruition.  It's a pain going through it, but as I said today, "Self, we are investing in our future."  We cannot compete globally, if we don't have infrastructure.

William - Things were so tore up, it was difficult to get a handle on where access to the tunnels may be.  However, after walking around a bit, I began to get a feel where they may be.  I need to do a little more research!

As for the Canary - I am the Canary:-)   I also hang a "Do Not Resuscitate" sign around my neck:-)

Charles - I often marvel at the amount of history at my doorsteps.  It is everywhere.  Yet, I didn't really appreciate it much until the last decade or so.

Jeanean - I never found the tunnels, but I have thoughts about where they may be.  When I was up there yesterday, it was early before many business were open.  I want to go back before long, and ask around for more information.  So stay tuned.

Myrl  Sutter Street may be delayed a bit, but since there is lots of free parking I'm sure the merchants will survive and benefit in the long run

Karen - That is my thinking too!  I notice some of the merchants have reduced hours, but the backdoor parking for many of them still provides easy access.

Myrl, I was tired tonight.  Busy day at work, then had to write my 30 in 30 post and play with Animoto.  I came here for my mini vacation.  Never disappointed, I love those photos.  It feels so like a movie set that I want to come right out there to have a closer look myself.

I'm glad to hear that the old part of town will be preserved and revitalized.  We need to keep our connections to the past before they're all gone.
