Hurricane Katrina five years ago

Hurricane Katrina came ashore along the gulf coast five years ago August 29, 2005

I was awake most of the night and watched the storm pass over from my home on Hwy 613 in Moss Point. Little did I know what was taking place only 5 miles from my house. Just across hwy 63 houses that should never have to worry about flooding were being flooded by this unique hurricane Katrina

Katrina was different from other hurricanes that I had experienced. I sat on my back porch and watch the blue hole of water white capping. Yet very little rain was falling from this massive storm. It was not until latter that evening before we knew of the mass destruction Katrina had caused.

People of this area had decided to stay home, and ended up in waist high water, many fighting for their lives. I cant imagine the horror they must have felt, if hurricane Katrina had came ashore during the night, I suspect many more lives would had been lost.

Thanks to all the individuals, organizations, men, women, children that helped to rebuild our area after hurricane Katrina..

Thank you

What an experience! I can't imagine that kind of weather. I'm from So Cal (now in washington state) and we did not get much (or any) big weather. I remember being glued to the tv though and wanting nothing more than to jump in my car and go down and help.

This is such a scary story. It truly is unbelievable the damage this hurricane caused. I know the affect will be felt for years to come. I can only imagine how scared the families were that were trying to get out, but so much more for those that decided to stay. I am glad your family was safe.

Alice, I don't think the pain Katrina caused will ever pass for many people.  I haven't been back to the area that I called "home" for so long (New Orleans/BR/Lafayette) since before the storm and so I think I haven't even begun my mourning in effect.  I've probably only prolonged the sense of loss by not confronting it head-on!  The scar is long and wide, but what a resilient people the Gulf Coasters are!  I'm glad that your area is well on it's way to being mended!

Diane, a hurricane is a frighting experience, we should always fear something of this nature and prepare. I know the people of the Gulf Coast will not take it so lightly in the future.

Stephanie, I have several friends who were in their attics, and I too can only imagine their fear.

Shelley, New Orleans is recovering, although it is heart breaking getting into the city seeing all the damage that has not yet recovered. Just be prepare to cry..I could still cry when I travel hwy 90 and remember the beautiful Old Oak trees that once lined the median in Biloxi. It was such a peaceful setting and now it is just like other beach hwy's(nothing but asphalt roads). Our gulf coast will be mended and hopefully the residence will not stay in the area during the next hurricane.

Thanks for the comments ladies, have a great Friday.

I remember it well.  My family and I had evacuated From Biloxi to Pensacola.  When the first pictures of the carnage came across the television screen, my heart sank.  I don't remember another moment in my life when I've been so overcome by emotion.  We thought for the next couple hours that we had lost everything.  Luckily, we were among the fortunate families that only took moderate damage.  Had we lived 200 meters farther south, we wouldn't have had a home to come back to.

Yes chris, you and your family were among the lucky ones. And many people were in shock at the first picures shown on television. Wlox did a wonderful job informing the public what was going on.

It is strange how there would be one house standing and all that was left of its neighbors were the slabs..  Glad you only had moderate damage, Katrina sure put things into perspective.

Hello, Alice. I started leaving you a response then realized I was literally hijacking your post. (I had not realized I still had such strong feelings about Kat) I decided to turn my comment into a blog post and link you in. I hope that is ok. If not let me know and I will undo that.

I read your profile...very impressive credentials. I would not be able to catch up with you in my life time, however if the opportunity arises I will refer (defer:-) to you.
