"And they make so much money and their schedules are so flexible!! I have purchased a couple of houses, so I already know alot about real estate!!"
All I can speculate is that I must make this look easy, or that my clients and I have so much fun that they never guess what really goes on behind the curtain! Five of my past clients have gone on to get their sales person license after working with me to buy a home. Perhaps in eleven year's time, that is not such a big number, but......
So many people are under the impression that what we do is a piece of cake and that we are overpaid. Who wouldn't want to be a part of this?
Naturally I always offer to mentor those who mention they are thinking about taking real estate classes to get their license. Whether they were embarrassed or simply did not want to bother me because I am busy, they never bother to ask, 'What's it really like Pat?"
If asked, I would start off by repeating to them that I really do enjoy my job. I consider real estate to be a service profession and it is very rewarding helping folks with one of the biggest investments they will ever make. From first time home buyers and single moms to investors and luxury home buyers. Real estate never gets boring!
I would then remind them that real estate professionals are self-employed responsible for paying their own income taxes and self employment taxes, not to mention health insurance and saving for retirement. The job is straight commission. It is recommended by experienced agents and their accountants that a new agent have a cash reserve to cover their first six months in the business. Did I mention you cover your own expenses? No, my office does not put gas in my car and provide me with a cell phone or free office.
Flexible schedule? Yes, until you get the call from the family coming in for the weekend who want to look at 30 homes. It can also be difficult to limit the work week to 40 hours.
Lots more to think about than most would imagine. If you sold a house today, your first payday will be at least 30 days out.
Best advice is to do some research before giving up the job you have.
