Wake County Schools
Many times the first question that families want to know about is the schools. Wake county schools have consistently been rated in the top of the country. However, there are some things that may be different from what you're used to.
First of all, we don't have "local town" school districts. It's not "Cary School District" or "Apex School District". All of the schools in Wake county area in one district, run by one elected school board.
There may be several differnt elementary, middle, and high schools in one town, depending upon the population. Your child may not necessarily be assigned to the school that's closed to your home, although that issue may be changing with the newly elected school board. (Watch for updates!).
Wake County also has different types of schools- from "year round" schedules to Magnet schools to traditional calendar year schools.
The Wake County School District has a wonderful website where you can find out everything from the student assignment to the days off to he school lunch menu!
Most importantly, the website has individual pages for each school, so you can look up the test scores, teacher to pupil ratio, etc. With 161 schools in the district, you can search for individual schools by clicking here.

Wake County schools also provide different Before and After school programs. Most before school programs begin at 7am and end when the school day begins. Most after school programs begin immediately following dismissal and end at 6pm.
Fees for the Before and After School Programs are $2.25 per hour for the Before School program and $2,75 per hour for the After School program.
