This is Not How to Fight Progress

By
Real Estate Agent with McGraw Realtors

Progress.  It's inevitable, right?  It's a part of life.  And progress is good too, right?  Well maybe.  But not everyone likes progress.  Especially when it begins to crowd what was previously uncrowded space.

I was out showing houses in a new developement the other day when we were told an interesting story.  Apparently a local resident who owned a parcel of property that bordered the new development was none too happy about the new houses being built.  His solution was...shall we say creative.  Here's a rendition of an actual sign that was posted.

I can see in your window sign by Bob Haywood

From what I understand, the sign isn't there anymore.  And that's good because something like that could get a person in trouble legally.  Think intimidation.  And while I'm not a lawyer, you might conclude that one could be brought up as a sexual offender, given privacy issues and legal ramifications.

If you're not happy about the development in your area, you have several legal options...

1. Sell and move farther out where there are less people.

2. Buy the property before the developer buys it and never sell it.

3. Fight the zoning change legally.

Whatever you do, when new development comes your way, do NOT post signs like this one!

Good topic, Bob. Frank Lloyd Wright said, "Own your view." That's something that I talk with clients about all the time. Make sure if the vista's important to you to buy it yourself.

That's an unusual approach to fighting future development--probably not very effective either.

Maybe he just shouldn't look.  Or the new owners need to know while they feel like they are in the country...they need to get some blinds or shades.

Good morning Bob,

When some houses were being constructed in our neighborhood the builder was actually very good about making sure windows were staged in the second stories so they didn't face house to house for that reason of seeing in each others bedrooms. Someone who had their house under construction noticed as the house next door was being framed their upper bedroom window was facing theirs. They went to the builder and asked them to re-frame that window or move theirs (theirs was already completed). The builder said no. They made a sign similar to this and put in their bedroom window! The builder ended up re-framing the window on the other house as prospective clients started complaining!
