Getting the Best Interior Pictures

I have been reading a lot lately about which camera to use when taking interior pictures, and the question "is a Point and Shoot or a SLR better?" keeps coming up. Which brand is the best to use? Do I need to become a professional photographer? The answer to all of these qu1960's Bathroomestions is the same, find a camera that you are comfortable with, one that fits your budget and then learn to use it.

So let's take a look on what really counts in a camera, it is the lens size. When choosing a camera know what you are going to use it for, and then choose one that is simple to use and will give you the best picture for your subject matter.  If you take your own exterior photos as well as interior room photos be sure that your camera lens size is "wide enough" to capture the full room. For example, a cell phone camera is great to take candid photos of friends, but interior room photo to put on the web, forget it.The lens size determines how wide the photo is going to be.

I use a SLR camera with a variable lens size from 55mm to 18mm, the 55mm adjustment takes great close up shots of street signs from the car, while the 18mm adjustment will take a good shot of the circa 1960's hall bath. For a really great shot of that room I would need to change to a 10mm lens.

Rule of thumb, the lower the number the wider the picture.

I hate bathroom pictures.  They all look alike....unless there is a garden spa tub or beautiful cabinetry or a nice skylight with furniture.  But, that aside, I am looking forward to tomorrrow's post.  I think most of my pictures are pretty good, but everyone can use helpful advice.

Ted, thanks! I've been considering a new camera. I'm thinking of the Canon Rebel Xti with a 10mm wide angle lens...

Hi Ted and thanks for explaining the camera lens ratios.  I look forward to your next tips!  I feel like my rooms always look much better in person than on film....

Great tips, Ted!  Thanks.  I'll try to remember that the lower the number, the wider the picture.

Ted,

I have an Olympus digital camera with a 4.0 megapixel, and a 6.1 mm lens.  It took some good exterior and interior shots of my last listing.  Thanks for your insight and I am looking forward to your additional tips.
