The Best of Friends, the Worst of Friends
Please let me introduce you to my cat and my dog. I know, they match. Believe me, that was an accident. Even though I'm a designer, I really wasn't trying to play matchy-poo with my animals.
We first found Ginger when he showed up in our garage, sleeping in a discarded baby seat. My daughter, Dominique, at that time was 2 years old. Ginger wasn't neutered, and was obviously galavanting the neighbourhood, looking for young, delightful felines. We checked with the SPCA, but no one was looking for this lovely Maine Coon cat. We ended up adopting Ginger, or should I say, he adopted us!
I know, Ginger is a girl's name, but his colouring is ginger, and we never in a million years thought he'd spend the rest of his life with us! So the name kind of stuck! We took Ginger to the vet, and after doing the right thing, and neutering him, he was all ours. The vet estimated his age to be 1 to 2 years old, the same age as Dominique. My daughter is now almost 16 years old, hence Ginger is now a senior citizen.
I'm really more of a dog person, although, after owning Ginger, I have a huge respect for cats, and love them dearly. We wanted a dog, and ended up with Digby the Ducktoller. As a puppy, all Digby wanted to do was play with his new found friend, Ginger the cat. However, Ginger would have absolutely nothing to do with this. He would stalk past Digby, and send one strong message, with the swat of a paw to Digby's face. Ginger was, and would remain in charge of this household, thank you very much!
The two seem to have worked things out, and mellowed with age. I couldn't resist taking these photos of Ginger and Digby. It pretty much sums up their relationship. I hope you enjoy a story in pictures.
Digby is asleep, and doesn't realize that Ginger actually has put his tail on Digby's snout!
Uh oh... Digby just woke up and realized that Ginger was too close for comfort - remember, he's been on the receiving end of a paw whack to the snout on more than one occasion. He's freezing and looking very nervous....
Ok, now Digby's thinking that if he just turns his back on Ginger, Ginger will maybe leave him alone and disappear - a dog can only hope...
Oh, puleeese.... Ginger picks himself up and repositions himself in the corner of the living room - enough already!
