73 Comments on Urgent Facebook Safety Tip that You need to Know Now!!!!!
This action will do nothing as regards to places. This is to notify you by email if you checked in or someone checked in someplace for you. I left those 2 boxes checked because I want an email if I am checked in someplace so I can act on it. You need to go to applications to change your preferences.
To change Places settings, go to Privacy Settings, Customize settings at the bottom. Go to places and set who you want to see your actions. I also disabled my friends placing me somewhere for obvious reasons, that's MY choice. You may feel different but it is your choice. As stated by a few above, FB does not place you anywhere, you do if you want. It's like 4square, it's voluntary. Thanks Larry, for starting the discussion.
Susan (comment #19), it's not about having something to hide, it's about not wanting my home to get robbed while I'm miles away.
Another Rain blogger informed me that he was able to check his friends in to Places without their knowledge or consent.
This is scary stuff isn't it, and it should be opt-IN and not OUT.
Thanks for the tip. I will change the setting as soon as i get home. It's disturbing however that this is even allowed
Just did it. Thanks for posting a very clear "how-to". I would never have found it there on my own.
Hi Larry. I'm glad that this is being discussed. It is a serious cause for concern. Perhaps not for Canadians like Susan but for Americans this is VERY intrusive.
Hi Craig in Comment #53. Yes but there have been serious issues with the government accessing data via Facebook. That is why some of us are concerned.
Larry: Just caught a re-blog of your post, but wanted to let you know that I think was a great tip to pass on to all of us. Thank you for taking the time and making the effort ...

Please take this post down it is 100% inaccurate and they are even removing valid comments pointing out the inaccuracies. Notifications are for you not for others. They are asking if YOU want to be notified when those things occur not if you want them to notify others. Really should check your facts before posting something with such a scary headline. If anyone has questions let me know and feel free to check out my resume
I would also argue that this post is not about safety as much is it is about branding for you. Just keeping it real.
Larry...
Allow me to begin by clarifying. This not a rumor. You're automatically checked in because of your zip code. There is also the problem of your FB friends being able to check you in somewhere you shouldn't be.
I wrote about FaceBook Places the day after it launched. I hope everyone is clear on what needs to be done. Your post touches down on Step One. There's more to it than that.
TLW...ROAR!
I've got to tell my kids, they sometimes log on with their i-touch.
Hi Larry - There seems to be a lot of confusion and misinformation about this issue. I definitely appreciate the concerns about safety and children. My understanding is that Facebook does not track simply when we log in; there is no automatic tracking.
Places sounds very similar to Foursquare. With both apps, you as the user have to 'check in' in order for your location to be visible. The main difference in Places is that other friends can also check you in. My guess is that Facebook will close this loophole. In the meantime, we all need to do more research on this by reading the Facebook FAQs and reputable online sites like Mashable.
Larry, I'm here via Al & Peggy Cunningham. I've heard of this before and after reading some of the comments I'm a little more confused. I plan to check it out further at FB. Thanks for bringing this up.
Don't know whether this is true or not, but it was too easy to do, not to do it... thanks, I think ;-)
Larry, Thanks for the notification. I followed your instructions … and saved the changes. Thanks again!
What I love about your post is more proof that folks do not even read the comments but blindly add their own thoughts for points or whatever reason..... sad as the best info is often in the comments section!
Valuable information Larry, we adjusted our setttings and re-blogged your post!
Thanks for the timely and valuable info!
