The St George Utah Replacement Airport is America's newest commercial service airport and will be complete in 4-5 months. There is a Grand Opening scheduled for all to attend on January 13, 2011. This will be the first official day for planes to take off from the new airport. From the information I have, the old airport will be shut down once the new one is ready for operation and flights into and out of the new airport will begin the following day.
The new airport is being built on 1,200 acres which is nearly five times the size of the existing St George airport. The new terminal is 33,000 square feet which is about twice the size of the existing terminal. This terminal includes a spectacular glass wall which will showcase the beautiful views of Pine Valley Mountain. There are currently 400 parking spots with the option of an additional 600 if and when needed.
The runway is 9,300 ft (1.8 miles) which can be expanded to 11,500 ft. This runway will be able to accommodate regional jet aircraft, Boeing 737's and the Airbus 319.
There will be a fire station built on site.
Future flight destinations for the St George Utah replacement airport could include Phoenix AZ, Los Angeles CA, Denver CO, San Francisco CA, Chicago IL, and Seattle WA. These cities seem to have the highest demand for service to them.
The new airport's flight patterns have been a big concern to many residents, especially those that live in the Washington Fields area. According to Rick Crosman, the airport manager, outgoing flights will take off flying east of the airport. Incoming flights will arrive over the Washington Fields area, but will be at 2000 ft elevation and gearing down their engines for landing.
The Southern Corridor being built from I-15 and providing access to the new airport should be completed by the end of October.
