4 Comments on Willingly Sacrificing Locational Privacy via FourSquare/Places/etc.. Are We Crazy?
Unfortunately, far too many people have sacrificed privacy for security, or simply for technology.
An interesting trade-off. Something we do everyday if we facebook, twitter, etc. Most people have given out even more information on their answering machines:
"Hi! This is Fred & Ethel Mertz. You won't be able to reach us for another 2 weeks because we went to California on some phony trip with Ricki & Luci, our neighbors".
Gene - I was laughing halfway through your story. I'm sure your friend was a little scared, but better you warned him than for something to happen. I cannot believe he was broadcasting his location while his children were home with a babysitter. Maybe it's because I watch too much Law & Order, but I am appalled by the amount of information people (especially women) give about themselves. I never say where I'm going.
I post some locational updates... when I want to be found... but I sure don't want anyone to know where I am all of the time. But there are plenty of other ways to figure out when someone isn't home.
My biggest thieving issue is apparently a neighbor kid that breaks into cars at night...
