History - September 5, 1882 was the first Labor Day celebration held by the Central Labor Union.  Today, Labor Day is a federal holiday which recognizes the contribution of American workers on the first Monday of September every year.

Labor Day was instituted as a response to the deaths of striking American Railway Union workers during the 1894 Pullman Strike.  President Grover Cleveland hoped that it would help to heal the wound developed between labor, business, and those in political power.  Congress unanimously passed the legislation within a week of the strike's end in 1996.
