When my brothers and I were growing up on a dairy farm, we had to have a lot of imagination to amuse ourselves. Think black-n-white TV, party lines and a pocket-sized transistor radio. We were way out in the boonies on a gravel road and rarely had visitors. But when we DID have visitors, we were ready for them.

One of our jobs, was to give a tour of our dairy farm, and it went like this ...

firecrackerArmed with firecrackers from Arizona (they were illegal in Oregon), one of us would create a diversion while another would stick a "black cat" in a fresh cow pie. Once the firecracker was lit, my brothers and I would take off running. Our visitors would be left there wondering what the heck? BOOM ... ker-splat!.

Another fun barnyard game to play was TAG, YOU'RE IT. We would run up and across a huge mound of cow manure while a city slicker chased us. We would know exactly where to run, the trick was to follow the green blades of grass. If grass was growing, the manure had been there for awhile. If not, it was still fresh. One kid who was chasing me took a short cut and ended up sinking to his waist.

I still feel kind of bad about it to this day. The kid was crying while his dad was hosing him off with cold water, wondering how bad the smell would be on the drive home. I thought my brothers and I were going to be in a LOT of trouble, but I couldn't help but notice that my parents were trying really, really hard not to laugh.

Nowadays, it seems the only TAG, YOU'RE IT game I get to play is the one I call phone tag. But it's not nearly as much fun. Phone tag memories don't linger like manure tag memories do.

OK, you win the prize for the best analogy of the day!

Phone tag memories don't linger like manure tag memories do.

Too funny!

Cynthia, I remember fire-crackers on the farm too.  We used to drop a lit cherry bomb inside a 40 quart milk can and watch the lid get blown 40 feet in the air.

It's a good thing your parents thought this was amusing.  Otherwise, you would have been in a lot of trouble.  It's always fun to look back on happy childhood memories.

I bet a lot of your readers didn't know a black cat was a brand of fire cracker =) Makes for better reading the way you have it!
I'm glad Monday is over, aren't you Cynthia?

Shirley - I couldn't believe my parents were on the verge of busting their gut. I have a feeling they didn't care for our visitors much. Later on I found out I went to High School with the kid who sunk into the manure. oops. Sorry Wendell!!

Paul - I was wondering if someone would get my reference to "black cat". Leave it to you to figure that one out! Monday is GONE, out of my sight, BRING IT ON!

Donne - did that tickle your funny bone?

Carra - where I live, phone tag is common. We have a lot of blind spots where our cell phones won't ring. Our redwood trees are taller than cell phone towers :)

The poor kid.  I'll bet he never forgot the day he was up to his waist in.......

Even worst, as an adult I'll bet you've got some even better tricks up your sleeve.

Andi - we were always up to something, otherwise it would have been a very boring existence.

Charita - who, ME?

Cynthia,  I'm a country girl too.  Maybe that's why we "clicked".  But I'm going to call you on this one.  I don't think you feel bad about it at all.  I think you still relish the thrill of that prank.  Come on.  Admit it!

I, however, still get sick to my stomach when I remember the time my brother and I sneaked into the tobacco barn loft, rolled some green (Yeah, now I know that's not good) tobacco in a piece of brown paper and smoked it.  OMG, talk about sick.

My folks seemed to think we'd both come down with a stomach flu.  Now I wonder.  Did they know?

LOL - Marian you are the SECOND person who has called me a prankster today. I'm not sure what you are talking about! Oooh, green tobacco, that can't be good! Your parents probably smelled the smoke and laughed about it.

What a fun read after a long day of playing phone tag! heehehe  It made me think of all the stuff my 5 brothers did - what a bunch of maniacs!  I'm surprised they turned out as good as they did.

Hey this is funny. I have got 3 marketing broadcast calls from WA. They call everyday.....same time. I usually just hang up but today I tried to call them back (phone tag) and of course that doesn't work. So I just got the 3 calls again - and this time I listened to the message and they did have a 'remove' from call list button at the very end. Yeah - no more phone tag from these yahoos!

Anna Banana - 5 brothers, oh my! I only have three and that is enough. I didn't know there was a remove option at the end of those calls. Guess I'll have to listen all the way through next time. Thanks!
